Target: Enrico Letta, Italian Prime Minister or President of the Council of Ministers of Italy
Goal: Commend Italian Parliament for drafting comprehensive new law to combat violence against women
We need to recognize the considerable efforts the Italian parliament has made to seriously address the issue of violence against women. The lawmakers confronted the all too frequent deaths of women at the hands of their romantic partners — one every other day between 2000 and 2012 — with the resolve to prevent future occurrences by drafting a comprehensive bill designed to provide victims with the assurance that the police will take effective measures to ensure their safety once a complaint is submitted.
The new Italian law is exemplary because it takes into account the essential truth that a delayed and lenient response to a complaint will discourage women from turning to law enforcement.Female victims of violence see the police as useless when their call for help seems to fall on deaf ears.In order to get women to denounce their abusers, the police has to act quickly to remove them from a threatening situation.Through provisions that promise the perpetrator’s immediate arrest and eviction from the home as well as the prioritized and expedited handling of gender-based violence cases, the legislation reassures victims that they won’t have to worry about enduring weeks and weeks of continued abuse while waiting for the offender’s eviction, arrest, and trial.
The expectation of an effective police response will make the women more confident about pressing charges because they won’t have to change their living situation to evade a perhaps even more violent partner enraged about being reported to the police.Instead, they could continue to remain in their homes with their children while the arrested offender is kept away from them for the sake of their safety. The law will even allow immigrant women to feel safe about reporting abuse to the police by granting them a residence permit so that they wouldn’t need to worry about being deported.
Dear Enrico Letta, Italian Prime Minister
The Italian parliament deserves praise for setting an example for how violence against women should be combated by drafting a comprehensive law whose many measures are specifically designed to ensure that women can rely on a responsive legal system that will take effective steps to guarantee their safety and punish their abusers.A law that clearly outlines the assistance and the police response that victims of gender-based violence can consistently count on will go a long way towards encouraging women to press charges and extracting them from dangerous circumstances.
By signing this petition, you will show your appreciation for a country that has made a priority of helping women overcome violence. As this issue hasn’t been addressed in many other nations with the appropriate legal remedies, we must take notice and applaud the instances where politicians have been responsible enough to confront it.
