Target: Gun rights advocates
Goal: Condemn the group of gun rights advocates for choosing the Newtown Starbucks as their rallying location
The 2012 school shooting in Newtown, Connecticut resulted in the death of children and faculty members. This shooting was covered heavily by the media and politicized by members of both political parties. Now, gun rights advocates have chosen this town as the location for a pro-gun rally. They planned a rally in the Starbucks Coffee in Newtown, Connecticut because Starbucks has a policy that allows people to carry guns in the coffee shop.
The day was called ‘Starbucks Appreciation Day’ to recognize the store’s gun carry policy. The Newtown Action Alliance is an alliance that was formed after the shooting to call for more gun control policies. This group called the pro-gun rally “reprehensible” and made a Facebook post saying, “We wonder why it isn’t okay to appreciate Starbucks at the same time appreciate the sensitive nature of the gesture in our neighborhood half a year after our community was ravaged by #gunviolence. There are 5 other Starbucks locations within about 15 miles of ours to choose from.”
The pro-gun advocates obviously picked the Starbucks in Newtown, Connecticut because of the tragedy that happened not too long ago. The tragedy is being politicized by gun rights advocates, and the 2,000 advocates that plan to go to Starbucks on the ‘Starbucks Appreciation Day’ know exactly what they are doing. They are choosing to rally when there is still a lot of sensitivity about the school shooting in the town. Condemn the gun rights advocates for choosing to rally in Newtown, Connecticut by signing the petition below.
Dear Gun Rights Advocates,
The location you chose for your recent pro-gun rally could not have been more offensive and insensitive. A shooting happened in Newtown, Connecticut that resulted in the death of 26 innocent people. This was your choice of location for the rally. The people of Newtown have been through a lot and talk about guns is very sensitive after the shooting. Seeing a group of people glorifying guns when someone you know has just died due to gun violence just makes the pain worse.
Starbucks Coffee has a policy that allows people to freely carry guns in the store. This is why the gun rights advocates chose Starbucks as their place to rally. It is called ‘Starbucks Appreciation Day’ because of the policy, but luckily the Starbucks in Newtown decided to stay closed on the day of the planned rally out of respect for the residents of Newtown.
It is wrong to plan a gun rally in Newtown when the town is still recovering from the shooting. There were so many more locations to choose from, yet you still chose the Starbucks in Newtown.
