Target: Florida Governor Rick Scott
Goal: Condemn Governor Scott for launching another ineffective and discriminatory hunt for non-citizen voters in Florida
Florida Governor Rick Scott plans to launch a new voter purge of non-citizens on the voter roll in Florida. Last summer, a similar hunt for non-citizens occurred; it mocked the voting process in the United States as Republican legislators systematically disenfranchised thousands of voters, the majority of whom were minorities and poor. This renewed effort to disenfranchise voters most likely to vote democratic in the upcoming state election follows in the footsteps of other Republican state legislatures’ efforts to curb voting rights in states throughout the United States. This disgraceful trend must be stopped in order to preserve the democratic process in the United States government.
Last year the Republican legislature limited voter-registration drives, closed the early voting window, and created long voting lines that targeted the impoverished and minority groups. Furthermore, Governor Scott launched a voter purge that he said was necessary because too many non-citizens were on Florida’s state voter rolls. The state’s Republican administration used false data in order to target certain voters in order to suppress them from voting in the 2012 presidential and state elections. Almost every election supervisor in all of Florida’s counties announced that Scott’s scheme was illegal. Thus, they refused to implement it. Very few ineligible voters were found, and many advocacy groups filed lawsuits against the state for targeting minority groups, especially Hispanics and Haitians. This level of discrimination within the U.S. government is appalling and must be condemned. Governor Scott’s 2012 voter purge wrought no practical result on the voter rolls. Originally, Scott claimed that 182,000 non-citizens were registered, but that number soon shrank to 198 people. The state abandoned its efforts very close to Election day as a result of the faulty nature of the purge and speaks to the illegal nature of Scott’s efforts.
Governor Scott’s Secretary of State Ken Detzner is currently crafting a new list of purportedly non-citizen voters by cross-checking state voter information with a federal database that the Department of Homeland Security governs. Election supervisors, however, remain skeptical of Scott’s new effort to remove voters. The U.S. Supreme Court authorized such an infringement on the voting rights of citizens when they recently gutted the Voting Rights Act this past June. Scott has in the past accused Democrats of defending the right of non-citizens to vote. Scott’s witch hunt against minority voters is disgusting and must be stopped. Please sign this petition to condemn Governor Scott for his renewed efforts to disenfranchise legal U.S. citizens in order to appeal to Republicans in the upcoming Florida state elections.
Dear Governor Rick Scott,
We condemn your renewed efforts to purge voters from Florida’s state voter rolls. Last year, your witch hunt predicated on faulty data became a national disgrace. Your administration not only limited voting rights by curtailing the window of early voting and cracking down on voter drives, but also because your administration incorrectly targeted minority groups as non-citizens.
Such actions are appalling in a country that prides itself as a democratic nation. We urge you to not appeal to Republicans in order to win the upcoming gubernatorial election by launching this new voter purge and stand up for democracy in your state by abandoning such efforts. All U.S. citizens regardless of their wealth status and ethnicity have the right to vote in all elections.
