Target: United States Congress
Goal: Allow only the use of sustainable palm oil
The palm oil industry has been wreaking environmental damage for years. Several nations have already committed to using only sustainable palm oil, but the United States has yet to take such an environmental initiative. Demand the country limit its use of palm oil to only that which has been certified as sustainable.
The last decade has seen a large amount of deforestation at the hand of the palm oil industry, causing particular damage to Borneo and Sumatra. The ecosystems of these nations have been hit hard, resulting in a large depletion of wildlife. The orangutan and Sumatran tiger of these regions have already gone extinct.
The toll this has taken on the countries directly affected is large enough as it is, but the impacts of these practices stretch worldwide. It is for this reason that several European countries have already ensured that only sustainable palm oil will be used within their nation. Such environmental consciousness should be applauded.
The Roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil is an organization which makes sure that the rights of indigenous people, animals, and habitats are protected during the process of creating palm oil. Their commitment to biodiversity and responsibility help them to maximize sustainability, making the palm oil that has been certified by them not only environmentally friendly but beneficial to every living thing in the ecosystems which the palm oil industry uses.
By signing the petition below, you will help encourage the United States to only use palm oil which has been certified as sustainable. As a leading world power, the nation has an obligation to demonstrate behavior which is considerate of the environment and the creatures which inhabit it.
Dear United States Congress,
A severe amount of environmental damage has been inflicted by the palm oil industry for years. While many countries have committed to using only palm oil which has been certified as sustainable, the United States has yet to do the same. Limit the nation’s use of palm oil to only certifiably sustainable products.
The palm oil industry is responsible for not only vast deforestation of regions of production, but the extinction of the orangutan and Sumatran tiger. The environmental affects are not only limited to countries where palm oil is extracted; the impact is worldwide, prompting several European nations to ensure only sustainable palm oil is used. The Roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil is an organization to look towards to see if palm oil has been made in a sustainable manner; it makes sure that the rights of indigenous people, animals, and their habitats, are protected during the creation process.
Please take action to ensure only palm oil which has been certified as sustainable is used. You have a responsibility as a leading world power to be considerate of the environment and the creatures within it.
