Goal: Commend Ford for including a more eco-friendly fueling option for their best-selling pick-up truck
Ford recently announced that the 2014 model of their most popular pick-up truck, the F-150, will come with the option of being equipped with a compressed natural gas (CNG) engine, making it the most eco-friendly truck on the market. Pick-up trucks in general use more fuel and emit more negative emissions into the air than cars and while, in an ideal world, everyone would downsize to a more eco-friendly vehicle, pick-ups are still necessary. Many pick-ups are used for work, especially by contractors, and therefore they see more mileage and get driven more than a basic vehicle used for commuting. This makes Ford’s announcement even more important and they deserve to be commended for taking the first step in creating a truly eco-friendly truck.
Compressed natural gas, otherwise known as CNG, is still considered to be a fossil fuel, but it currently the best option available when considering alternatives to gasoline. It is composed of methane, which produces carbon dioxide and water vapor—the same things humans release into the air. Gasoline, on the other hand, has higher carbon emissions with nitrogen oxides and sulfur dioxide being released into the atmosphere. Using CNG also means releasing 80 percent less carbon monoxide, 10 percent less carbon dioxide, and 45 percent fewer hydrocarbons into the air. Overall, this amounts to a much smaller amount of greenhouse gases being released.
Buyers of the 2014 F-150 will have the option of having the CNG fuel system installed so that the truck will run on both gasoline and CNG. With the CNG system, the driver will also be helping themselves, as the CNG equivalent of one gallon of gas is currently only $2.11. It is estimated that each truck will get approximately 23 highway miles per gallon, going 750 miles on one tank of gas. Furthermore, the fact that CNG is a much cleaner fuel to burn will allow for longer periods of time between general maintenance checks.
Overall, this is a huge step for those who need to drive a truck but want to become more eco-friendly. It is not the perfect solution, but until another alternative energy source is made widely available, it is the best option. Ford Motors should be commended for taking this step to creating a better future and protecting the environment.
Dear Alan Mulally,
Thank you for creating a CNG option for the 2014 Ford F-150. It is an incredibly important step as we reach for a greener future and work to reduce the number of negative emissions into our environment. Allowing trucks to run on CNG will have a huge impact on the reduction of greenhouse gases as CNG is the cleanest fossil fuel available. The fact that it will allow drivers to fuel their truck for less and also increase safety by decreasing the risk of a fire is a wonderful bonus as well.
It is wonderful to see these options available on one of the most popular vehicles available today. I hope to see these efforts extended and made available to more cars and trucks in the future as this is so important.
Thanks for being at the top of the market and taking this important step.
