Target: Government of China
Goal: Urge the Chinese government to relocate a hazardous landfill in the village of Tankou in Guangdong province
Since July 25th, residents of the village of Tankou in China’s Guangdong province have been protesting the establishment of a landfill in their village that has been interfering with their health and daily lives for years. Three villagers were forcefully taken away at their latest protest on August 1st.
According to the residents, the smell from the landfill can be noticed from kilometers away and no one dared open their windows, even in the summer. In addition, the pollution caused by the landfill was so great that local groundwater was undrinkable.
The landfill was found to be emitting large amounts of dioxins – carcinogens with 1,000 times the toxicity of the harmful carcinogen potassium cyanide. Dioxins are known to cause skin irritations, headaches, memory loss, depression, birth defects, and cardiovascular problems. While experts suggest that landfills be built more than 2.5 kilometers away from the nearest residents, less than 200 meters stand between the landfill and the residents of the village of Tankou. The close proximity to the landfill has taken a toll on the villagers’ health; the rate of cancer has gone up significantly in the past few years.
By signing this petition you will help urge the Chinese government to relocate the landfill in the village of Tankou to protect the health and well-being of its residents.
To the Government of China:
Protests against the landfill in the village of Tankou in Guangdong province have been going on for a long time, yet the government has never responded in any way other than arresting the protestors. These villagers’ concerns are not without reason. The pollution caused by the landfill is so great that the villagers are unable to drink groundwater; they are also unable to escape the ghastly smells emitting from the landfill, which is less than 200 meters away from the closest residents.
The landfill is a huge health hazard to the villagers of Tankou. Dioxins, a carcinogen that is associated with a variety of health problems such as memory loss, depression, and birth defects, has caused the rate of cancer in the village to go up significantly in the past few years. The villagers had no say in whether they would allow the landfill to be established near their homes, and so have no choice but to be exposed to this dangerous operation daily.
Please consider relocating the landfill in the village of Tankou to an area further away from residential areas. These villagers do not deserve to be exposed to serious health hazards or to have their lives disrupted in this way.
