Target: Chicago Cardinal Francis George
Goal: Condemn Cardinal Francis George for pulling funding from immigration groups because they support same-sex marriage
Recently, Chicago Cardinal Francis George withdrew funding from various immigration groups because they supported gay marriage in Illinois. Gay marriage violates the tenets of Roman Catholicism, so Cardinal George justified his actions by asserting that he could not give money to organizations that openly disrespected Catholic doctrine and beliefs. Such actions by the Catholic Church go against its aims to help the poor and helpless and they depict the Catholic Church as a prejudicial institution that operates under the veil of religiosity.
The Catholic Campaign for Human Development (CCHD) cut funds for the Illinois Coalition for Immigrant and Refugee Rights (ICIRR), an organization that gave money to several other immigrant organizations. The CCHD stated that men and women could not be interchanged in family life and in marriages. However, while the CCHD severed funds from the ICIRR, it told member organizations that they could continue to receive funds if they disassociated themselves with the ICIRR. Up to 130 Illinois organizations that are funded through the ICIRR may lose the funds as a result of the Cardinal’s decision.
The actions of Cardinal George are another example of the Catholic Church severing funding for groups that advocate for marriage equality. On many occasions, the Catholic Church has cut funding for charities as well as homeless groups that endorse gay marriage. The Catholic Church granted one million dollars to encourage Catholics to support immigration reform in 2012 as a part of its aims to support the weak and impoverished. Please sign this petition to condemn the Cardinal for advocating second-class citizenship for same-sex couples through his blatant anti-gay actions.
Dear Cardinal Francis George,
We want to express our displeasure for your recent decision to sever funding from various immigration groups because they openly support marriage equality. The mission of the Catholic Church is to support the vulnerable and the poor, which is why it has openly advocated for comprehensive immigration reform. However, your decision to defund the Illinois Coalition for Immigrant and Refugee Rights and its other member organizations because they endorse marriage equality goes against the very mission of your prestigious Church.
This is not the first time members of the Catholic Church have cut off funds for groups such as charities and homeless groups for supporting gay marriage. Please reconsider your anti-gay stance and actions and promote an image of the church as an institution that protects human rights and promotes social equality.
