Target: Will Travers, Chief Executive Officer of Born Free
Goal: Thank sanctuary for rescuing monkeys from abusive situations in homes, shows, zoos, and laboratories.
Justin Bieber might be the one making headlines about monkey ownership, but primate sanctuaries, like Born Free USA, are the entities deserving of true attention and admiration. The Born Free USA Primate Sanctuary provides all species of monkeys with safe, permanent homes after being rescued from abusive environments in research laboratories, private possession, and roadside zoos. Thank this primate sanctuary and others like it for keeping monkeys safe and educating people how wildlife should live in the wild.
Situated on 186 acres of land in Texas, the Born Free USA Primate Sanctuary nurtures primates of all kinds to meet their innate physical, social, and psychological needs. Most of the monkeys that live here are macaques, baboons, and vervets, which experience freedom of movement, choice of food, and choice of social companions. Many of these primates have never been given the freedom to roam in a natural environment because they were held in captivity by humans who thought they were cute. Unlike zoos and tourist attractions, this primate sanctuary allows monkeys to live their lives in a natural environment with as little human interaction as possible.
After years of abuse, neglect, and exploitation, Born Free USA offers people the opportunity to sponsor one of four struggling primates to help pay for their food and rehabilitation care. Sign the below petition to show your support for legitimate and caring primate sanctuaries, like Born Free USA, that are dedicated to letting wildlife live in the wild.
Dear Mr. Travers,
Thank you and your staff for rescuing and caring for primates who have been abused, neglected, exploited, and held captive. Although some states allow people to keep monkeys as pets, this practice is neither safe nor healthy for the humans or the monkeys involved. I am urging you to sponsor awareness campaigns to educate the American public about senseless primate ownership and discourage people from considering primates to be pets.
Unlike some monkey habitats around the country, the Born Free USA Primate Sanctuary is not a tourist attraction and it’s not a zoo. Please continue to treat the primates under your care with respect, patience, and caring love. Without sanctuaries like yours, rare species of monkeys would be on their way to abuse and even extinction.
