Commend Judge for Protecting Women’s Access to Abortion Services

planned parenthood

Target: United States Chief District Judge William Conley

Goal: Applaud Judge Conley for his recent actions in blocking unnecessary restrictions on abortion care providers

Wisconsin governor Scott Walker signed into law a bill which included a measure requiring providers of abortions to hold admitting privileges at a hospital within 30 miles. A few days later Judge Conley issued a stay of the measure so that a lawsuit against the provision could be pursued by Planned Parenthood and Affiliated Medical Services, who argue that the requirement would severely restrict access to abortions in the state, to the point that Wisconsin women would have to travel to Madison or Milwaukee for abortion services. Conley recently extended the hold indefinitely, writing that “‘any benefit is greatly outweighed by the burdens caused by increased travel, decreased access and, at least for some women, the denial of an in-state option for abortion services.'” His ruling allows the two providers to continue operations at least until his final decision at the trial’s conclusion.

In Mississippi, Alabama, North Carolina, and Texas, state legislatures have pushed through admitting privileges requirements and most have met judicial opposition, because the measures are blatantly unconstitutional, restricting abortion access, violating due process, and treating abortion providers different than other medical practices. Anti-abortion groups have “so far failed to prove that quality of care was linked to admitting privileges.”

By signing this petition, you will demonstrate your support for Judge Conley’s decision to defend women’s reproductive rights. You will encourage other federal judges to stand up with Judge Conley in the fight to protect abortion care providers from further discrimination, blocking unconstitutional and medically unnecessary measures attacking abortion access.

Dear Judge Conley,

Your recent decision to stay enforcement of the admitting privileges requirement for abortion providers in Wisconsin is a huge victory for women. I hope that the upcoming trial supports your decision that the measures are unconstitutional and violate women’s rights.

Thank you for remaining a steadfast ally in the struggle for women’s reproductive rights in Wisconsin, and for upholding the human rights laid out in our Constitution in the face of blatant ignorance and irresponsibility from state legislatures. I applaud your efforts and hope that more judges follow your example.
