Target: Sr. Monica Collins, Principal, St. Lucy’s Priory High School
Goal: Rehire teacher wrongfully fired for sexual orientation
Adored teacher Ken Bencomo has had a long tenure at St. Lucy’s Priory High School. He’s been teaching, coaching and doing many other things to improve the student experience for 17 years, but Mr. Bencomo was subsequently fired after being featured on a gay marriage celebratory article. Demand St. Lucy’s reverse its discriminatory action.
Ken Bencomo has participated as the yearbook coordinator, the dance coach, and he was head of the English Department. His work has been appreciated by students, former students, and coworkers alike. When the article ran in the Daily Bulletin featuring him and his longtime partner there was much support and congratulations for Ken from previous students, staff, and friends, but the school reacted differently. It fired Ken Bencomo without any justifiable reason.
Since St. Lucy’s fired Mr. Bencomo the alumni, staff, and students have spoken up for him in hopes of his return. There has been a call for action to speak up for individuals still being discriminated against despite landslide victories recently for the LGBT community as a whole. Demand St. Lucy’s Priory High School immediately undo Ken Bencomo’s termination.
Dear Sr. Collins,
Recently the unwarranted termination of Ken Bencomo has shown concern for discriminatory practices. Bencomo’s long tenure at St. Lucy’s is decorated with coaching, teaching, and yearbook moderation, which only proves how valuable he is there. It was unreasonable and seemingly prejudiced to fire Mr. Bencomo and so I am urging you to rehire Ken Bencomo immediately.
As I’m sure you are aware, since St. Lucy’s fired Mr. Bencomo the alumni, staff, and students have spoken up for him in hopes of his return. I feel that it would only serve as an act of individual discrimination. I am encouraging you to reinstate Ken Bencomo as a teacher at St. Lucy’s Priory High School.
