Applaud City’s New Green Public Utilities Initiative

Target: Art Torres, President of the San Francisco Public Utilities Commission

Goal: Commend San Francisco’s new green energy program, CleanPowerSF

CleanPowerSF, set to launch in Spring 2014, will provide San Francisco residents with 100 percent California-certified renewable energy. CleanPowerSF’s benefits include the creation of green jobs and accessible green power. The new program is also a collective effort address climate change. Please applaud this new energy initiative and its environmental sustainability.

This new program will enable residents to reduce their personal carbon footprint while also decreasing the city’s overall greenhouse gas emissions. Other California municipalities that have implemented this program are already benefiting. Marin County’s community-choice aggregation program continues to thrive since its implementation in 2011, and other counties are following through with their own initiatives. Francesa Vietor, a member of the San Francisco Public Utilities Commision, wrote in a Huffington Post article that CleanPowerSF will directly create 90 jobs and bring about up to 500 jobs within the program’s first five years.

This alternative energy provider will create competition within the current monopoly held by the highly criticized Pacific Gas & Electric, or PG&E. PG&E only provides 20 percent of California-certified renewable energy, but with unsustainable sources like natural gas and nuclear energy. CleanPowerSF is a much-needed option for customers. Please show your support of this city’s efforts to operate public utilities with clean, green energy.

Dear San Francisco Public Utilities Commission President Art Torres,

I commend the San Francisco Public Utilities Commission for creating the green energy initiative, CleanPowerSF. Once this program is implemented, residents will be able to access 100 percent California-certified renewable energy, made possible by wind, solar, small-hydro, and other sustainable sources.

Even though rates will increase because of the utilization of cleaner energy sources, the benefits will outweigh the costs in the creation of a sophisticated green energy work sector, which will eventually stabilize energy prices. CleanPowerSF enables residents to directly address climate change by using renewable energy and diminishing their personal carbon footprint. Because of the three public surveys conducted by the city’s public utilities commission, there is complete assurance that the public wants this clean power alternative. CleanPowerSF is an investment in the community, since the return of the higher rates will go back into the city as more local clean energy projects and discounts for low-income customers, according to the Huffington Post article authored by Francesca Vietor, member of the San Francisco Public Utilities Commission.

CleanPowerSF is finally breaking up the energy monopoly held by PG&E, which has had a long-running reputation of customer dissatisfaction by way of blackouts, gas pipe explosions, and faulty so-called smart meters. Thanks to CleanPowerSF customers will now have the option of receiving energy that is absolutely clean and renewable.

Corey, thanks for trying to help but your petition has a big mistake in it. CleanPowerSF is not planned to be more expensive, in fact it will meet or beat PG&E on price.
