Demand Drilling Company Retract Gag Order on Settlement

Target: Ranged Resources CEO, Jeff Ventura

Goal: Condemn Ranged Resources for applying gag order on fracking settlement.

Fracking or hydraulic fracturing has been a controversial technology used to extract natural gas or oil located thousands of feet beneath the earth. It has become a billion dollar enterprise since its conception. The process involves the pumping  of harmful chemicals into the earth, which has become the focal point of the debate. Environmentalists, scientists, and residents who live near these extraction sites are concerned with the possible contamination of the water supply. On the other side of the debate are the industries that are involved with engineering these extraction structures. They refute these concerns and say the water supply is not exposed to any dangers.

A drilling company named Ranged Resources had offered the Hallowich family a resettlement offer of 750,000 dollars after complaints of health complaints due to high levels of fracking in their vicinity, which included claims of burning eyes, sore throats, headaches, earaches, and a contaminated water supply. However, this offer came on one sketchy condition. The family had to accept a gag order, which prohibits them from speaking negatively about their company and fracking for the rest of their lives.

The absurdity of this gag order is that their attorneys also applied it to their children. In addition, the parents, Stephanie and Chris Hallowich, had to sign an affidavit claiming that the drilling operations had not contributed to any adverse health effects. The Hallowich family had no choice but to accept these terms because they were concerned for their family’s health and had no economic means of moving out without the settlement money. Why would a company go to such extreme measures and put a life long gag order on the entire family if they claim fracking is safe? The company’s objectives are clear. They want to silence any negative outcries on fracking that may jeopardize their business.

Ranged Resources is trying to rewrite the public record and the image of their practice by buying the silence of their victims. Because of this settlement, the records will not indicate any health concerns  involving this incident. This will only perpetuate ignorance and allow misinformation to spread. Sign this petition to put a stop on the unethical practices of Ranged Resources. The family should not be forced to relinquish their speech on a very critical environmental issue in order to reach a settlement that was rightfully theirs to begin with. It is a crime against humanity to shamefully hide evidence that may reveal potentially fatal environmental hazards.

Dear Mr. Ventura,

It is a distasteful maneuver to take advantage of an ailing family. Why would you attach a gag order to a settlement when  you claim fracking is benign to human health and environment? It doesn’t help your case when you apply the gag order to the Hallowich family’s children. It is an unprecedented and shameful legal maneuver to strip the free speech of a minor.

You damaged a family’s property value, jeopardized their health, lowered their quality of living, and essentially forced them to move out. Yet, you expect them to be silent so you can stifle any discussion about fracking. Please remove the gag order on the condition of the settlement and allow for open dialogue on this technology.
