Demand Justice for Missing Man

Target: Sergio Cabral, Governor of Rio de Janeiro

Goal: Demand a full and prompt investigation into the disappearance of Amarildo Souza Lima.

Amarildo Souza Lima has been missing ever since he was “released” from Brazilian Military Police custody. Sign the petition and demand that the Brazilian government launch a thorough investigation into Souza Lima’s disappearance.

Souza Lima was taken into custody after he was mistaken for a drug dealer that the Military Police were chasing. Security cameras show him entering the Unidade de Polícia Pacificadora (UPP) building, but there is no record of him ever leaving. The police claim that Souza Lima was released, and that the lack of corroborating video footage is the result of a broken security camera. However, Souza Lima’s family and friends, along with human rights activists, fear the worst; the institution of the UPP in Rio de Janeiro’s shanty towns has coincided with a rise in human rights complaints, reports Amnesty International.

Souza Lima is a lifelong resident of Rocinha, a shanty town neighborhood in Rio. A bricklayer with a completely clean criminal record, he is well-known by both residents and police in the community, which makes his sudden disappearance all the more suspicious.

Demand justice for Amarildo Souza Lima and his family. Sign the petition and tell the government to launch a full investigation, and to take all necessary steps to protect witnesses and participants in the investigation from intimidation.

Dear Governor,
Amarildo Souza Lima has never committed any crime. He is a well-known figure in his community. And he is missing.
Souza Lima was taken into custody at the Unidade de Polícia Pacificadora (UPP) building in Rocinha after the Military Police erroneously arrested him, apparently mistaking him for a drug dealer they had been chasing. Although the police claim that they released Souza Lima not long after the mix-up, he has not been seen or heard from since. Camera footage from the UPP station shows him entering the building but never leaving. The police have claimed that this is merely the result of a broken camera, but Souza Lima’s family, friends, and community–along with human rights activists around the world–fear the worst.
Amarildo Souza Lima has been willing to help those in his community, and now it is time for his community–and his government–to help him. I urge you to be extremely proactive in the search for Amarildo Souza Lima. I urge you to protect potential witnesses and informants from harassment and intimidation. And most of all, I urge you to bring to justice those responsible for Souza Lima’s disappearance–no matter who they are.
