Target: United Kingdom Prime Minister David Cameron
Goal: Put an end to the United Kingdom’s increasing use of animals in research and testing
The number of scientific experiments carried out on animals in the United Kingdom over the past year rose by 8% despite the government’s claim that it was going to reduce, and possibly eliminate, the practice. The exact number of procedures actually broke four million for the first time. Animal testing is outdated and unnecessary. There is no reason why these numbers should continue to increase and this must be stopped.
Procedures on animals in research increased from 317,200 to 4.11 million last year due to growing use of genetically modified animals. The number of non-human primates used in research was also rose 22 percent. Gavin Grant, the Chief Executive of the Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (RSPCA), made a statement saying, “It’s often stated that many procedures are simply [to do with] breeding animals. Let’s be clear, breeding relates to the procedures used to create genetically altered animals, for example, hormone injections and surgery to implant embryos.” Many of these animals are killed in the process and those that survive are forced to endure painful side-effects of the treatments.
Research groups making money off of the projects continue to emphasize how genetic modification is the next generation of tools that will be used to improve human health and life, but medical professionals disagree. Dr. Elias Zerhouni of the US National Institute of Health recently addressed an audience of researchers saying, “We have moved away from studying human disease in humans. We need to refocus and adapt new methodologies for use in humans to understand disease biology in humans.” Despite the fact that most medical professionals throughout the UK believe animal testing no longer serves a purpose, research facilities continue to push genetic modification and other tests because it is profitable.
Please sign the petition below to demand that the UK government honor its promise and put an end to animal testing and research.
Dear Prime Minister Cameron,
Despite the UK’s announcement that it would put an end to animal testing, the number of animals used in testing and research over the past year has increased by 8 percent, 22 percent in primates. This increase is largely the result of a push by research laboratories looking to emphasize genetic modification tests.
Sadly, thousands of animals are being tortured and losing their lives every year for research that most medical professionals in the UK believe is outdated and unnecessary. These research labs are profiting off of the pain of the animals they use by promoting research that ceases to aid the medical industry. Please end these procedures and uphold your agreement to end animal testing.
