Target: US Senate
Goal: Support ban on lead-based ammunition
California has taken a drastic step in protecting wildlife in the state by proposing a statewide ban on lead-based ammunition, which will come up before the Senate soon. This ban will remove a massive danger to the critically endangered California Condor, the largest North American land bird. With their numbers in only the triple digits, poaching and habitat loss are not the only threat to these enormous living fossils. Condors are scavengers, meaning carrion is the main staple of their diet.
When hunters shoot animals with lead-based ammunition, the toxins remain in the bodies of the animals, subsequently poisoning many secondary or tertiary consumers, including the rare, ever-dwindling California Condors. Lead poisoning is the main cause of death in the species. The treatment of Condors and other wildlife due to lead poisoning is expensive, and paid for by not only private entities, but by the public as well. Lead ammunition has also been shown to be a major health risk to humans, from those who fire the guns to those who eat meat tainted by lead bullets.
The ban has been met with opposition from pro-gun supporters, and will be decided upon by the Senate soon. If it passes, California will be the first state in the country to have banned traditional ammunition. Please show your support for this proposal by sending a message to the public and the United States Senate.
Dear United States Senate,
As a supporter of wildlife, I am wholly in favor of California’s proposed ban on lead-based traditional ammunition. Saving the last of the California Condors and giving them the chance to continue their return from the verge of extinction is a vital mission, and the eradication of lead ammunition will remove their main cause of death.
Lead bullets have been shown to have adverse effects upon humans from increased lead levels to lead toxicity. I support California in its first step toward a new regulation on ammunition for the better of both the public and wildlife.
