Applaud Transgender Teen for Fighting for Equal Rights

Target: Ashton Lee

Goal: Applaud Ashton Lee for creating a petition that calls for equal rights for transgender students

Transgender teens face discrimination in high school when it comes to the separation of men and women. There are male bathrooms and there are female bathrooms. There is one locker room for the boys and one locker room for the girls. And normally there is a baseball team for boys only and a softball team for girls only. The clear separation of the genders in high school makes it difficult for transgender students to feel comfortable in the high school atmosphere.

Many schools will not allow transgender students to play on the sports team or use the bathroom that best matches their gender identity. A brave young transgender teen, Ashton Lee, has created a petition in his home state of California in order to ensure greater freedom for transgender students. The petition allows transgender students to have the choice of which bathroom to use and which sports team or school club to join.

Ashton Lee has obtained more than 5,700 signatures. The petition was presented to the state Senate and it was passed as Assembly Bill 1266. Now the governor of California must sign the bill so it can become law. Governor Jerry Brown, a Democrat, will likely sign the bill. Lee went to Governor Brown’s office to deliver the petition signatures and encourage him to sign the bill.

Lee has experienced discrimination in high school because of his gender identity. He was placed in a female physical education class which added a lot of stress to his life and caused his grades to suffer. His ability to overcome the discrimination he faced has given Lee the strength to fight for other transgender students who are going through the same situation. Commend Lee for his bravery by signing the petition below.

Dear Ashton Lee,

Many students would not have the courage to do what you are doing. You have created a petition that has gotten over 5,700 signatures in California. You did this in order to make sure that no transgender student has to experience the embarrassment and pain that you have experienced in high school when you were wrongly placed into the female physical education class.

Your petition helped get Assembly Bill 1266 passed through the state Senate, which allows students to choose the bathroom that best matches their gender along with sports teams and other school activities. It is important that transgender students be allowed to choose for themselves, or else the school may put them into the wrong class or on the wrong sports team. Most people don’t realize how much of a problem that would be for transgender students, but it causes a lot of stress when you are made to stand out in school.

The next step is for Governor Brown to sign the bill, and you have already made an effort to encourage him to do so. If Governor Brown truly cares about all of the students in California, he will sign the bill. Your efforts to get this bill to become law are inspiring and have already impacted more people that you realize.
