Condemn Court for Lifting Monsanto Ban

Target: Members of Conseil d’Etat

Goal: Restore ban on genetically modified Monsanto crops in France

Recently, a French court has overturned a ban on MON810, one of two types of genetically modified corn that is approved by the European Union. The French court has done this twice in two years. France, however, is a very vocal opponent of genetically modified organisms (GMOs). Monsanto has attempted to lift European bans on its crops numerous times, such as in Brussels, where it succeeded in lifting a ban for 10 years. The company has since tried to request an extension in the lift, but has failed.

The court that lifted the ban pointed out that that a ban “can only be taken by a member state in case of an emergency or if a situation poses a major risk” according to the EU, and claimed that there wasn’t substantial scientific evidence to keep such a ban in place. Yet they identified danger, stating that they “take note of the ruling and recall the goverment’s undertaking… to maintain the moratorium on growing GM crops to prevent economic and environmental risks for other crops and bee-keeping.” France’s Agriculture Minister stated that the government, “is not in favour of GM, especially MON810 which is a corn that is resistant to herbicides,” and plans to fight the crop.

The French government has to maintain this ban on Monsanto. As the EU recognizes the threat of GMOs and the threat they pose to local farmers, the message to Monsanto needs to be clear: they are not welcome. Sign this petition to urge the Conseil d’Etat to reinstate the ban on MON810.

Dear members of Conseil d’Etat,

Recently, you overturned a ban on MON810, a genetically modified crop produced by Monsanto. Your organization cited the European Union’s ruling that a ban can only take place “by a member state in case of an emergency or if a situation poses a major risk,” and stated that there was a lack of scientific evidence to keep such a ban in place. I disagree completely. GMOs and Monsanto in general pose a serious risk to local health, agriculture, and the economy.

Monsanto has been known for planting GMO crops near non-GMOs, and when the seeds cross pollinate, Monsanto sues the other farmer for using Monsanto products. They have won these cases, and their greed is ever increasing. Allowing Monsanto crops in your country is detrimental to the well being of an entire agricultural industry.

I encourage you to reinstate the ban on MON810. Monsanto is a dangerous company with clear intentions: to make as much money as possible, without considering adverse effects on the human population. Please, reinstate the ban and send Monsanto a message, letting them know that they cannot control crops everywhere.
