Commend Missouri Schools for Switching to Natural Gas Transportation

Target: Lee’s Summit School District

Goal: Commend Lee’s Summit School District for contributing to the environment and saving money for education

The Lee’s Summit School District in Missouri is going green by making the big transition to natural gas transportation. At least 106 of the district’s school buses as well as 46 of the district’s trucks and vans will begin running on natural gas from the start of the 2013 fall semester.  The district hopes to switch at least 93% of its school buses to cleaner fuel within ten years.

Although the switch to cleaner gas will cost the district $20.3 million, vehicles upkeep expenses are expected to be lower and the district anticipates saving $11 million in fuel and maintenance in the next ten years—money that they plan to put toward technology equipment for classrooms.

Natural gas is not only better for the environment but for the students and bus drivers as well; compared to gasoline and diesel, natural gas is lighter and has a higher ignition temperature, creating much less mess and danger in the event of a spill. Natural gas vehicles are also free of the black smoke emitting from the tailpipes that is so typical of vehicles running on diesel.

By signing this petition you will help us show appreciation for Lee’s Summit School District for choosing to go green in order to keep the environment and public safe and healthy.

Dear Lee’s Summit School District:

Having reading a news article about your switch to natural gas vehicles for the coming semester, I wanted to thank you for making this choice in the interest of environmental and public health.

I am glad that although the cost of the transition was high, costs of fuel and maintenance will be lower than that of former diesel vehicles.  I hear that the school district plans to invest in more technological equipment for classrooms with the extra money, and I believe that they will be a wonderful asset to students’ learning.

Again, I appreciate Lee’s Summit School District for deciding to go green.  I hope that more school districts will follow your example and transition to cleaner fuels for a safer, healthier world.
