Commend Actor for Anti-Deforestation Innovation

Target: Woody Harrelson, Jeff Golfman, and Step Forward Paper

Goal: Support the novel anti-deforestation project of these individuals as they set out to change the way we make paper.

According to the Ecology Global Network, the best way to save trees is to recycle. Academy Award-nominated actor Woody Harrelson has created a company to do just that.

Driven by a lifelong passion for trees and forest environments, Woody Harrelson teamed up with partner Jeff Golfman to start Step Forward Paper, which reconstitutes agricultural wheat waste to make paper. One of the most environmentally sustainable paper types in North America according to Life Cycle Study, Step Forward Paper came out of years of anti-deforestation advocacy by Harrelson, who eventually realized that changing the supply rather than politics would reduce the annual felling of trees – about 4 billion worldwide according to the Ecology Global Network.

The wheat waste innovation follows Harrelson’s desire to include farmers in the paper industry. Step Forward buys the wheat waste from farmers after they have both finished the grain harvest and seen to other agricultural wheat uses like animal bedding and soil maintenance. By reconstituting this waste, Step Forward helps support sustainable agriculture without jeopardizing food supply. Indeed, Step Forward hopes to increase it while striving toward their ultimate goal: 100 percent tree- free paper.

Despite the ubiquity of electronic technology that invites talk of a purportedly “post-paper age,” Woody Harrelson recognizes that paper demand will double in the next 15 years. His response with Step Forward is paper that distinguishes itself among other “tree-less” varieties such as those of hemp or kenaf by utilizing actual waste, transforming the discarded into something of economic and ecological value. From guaranteeing recyclable packaging to using renewable hydroelectric and wind energy to directing a portion of proceeds to three ecologically-minded charities, Step Forward must be commended for striving for environmental sustainability at so many levels of business.

Please sign the petition below, and support Woody Harrelson’s remarkable and earnest efforts to curb the felling of trees, perhaps the most poignant symbols of our natural world. In the direction of changing our behavior and mindset to care for our environment, let us take a “Step Forward.”
