Applaud Coalition’s Fight for Gay Workplace Rights

Target: Americans for Workplace Opportunity

Goal: Commend Americans for Workplace Opportunity for trying to end job discrimination against gays

Job discrimination is just one of the many forms of discrimination that lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender people face on a daily basis. Fighting against this bias, the United States government recently created a bill called the Employment Non-Discrimination Act which would ban discrimination against gays in the workplace. The bill was created many years ago, but has seen limited progress on the road to becoming law.

Fortunately, a coalition of civil rights groups called Americans for Workplace Opportunity has started a campaign to end workplace discrimination for gay people. Two of the most well-known groups involved in the coalition are the Human Rights Campaign and American Civil Liberties Union. Americans for Workplace Opportunity is approaching 13 different senators from 11 different states to help get the bill passed. Most of the senators being targeted are Republicans. Only three of the senators are Democrats out of the 11 states.

Conservative president of the Traditional Values Coalition Andrea Lafferty argues that the bill will not be supported even by some Democrats because if protects transgender individuals alongside gays. Lafferty stated that transgender people “are kind of like the crazy aunt at Thanksgiving. [Gay people] put up with the crazy aunt at Thanksgiving, but they don’t want to be seen with her in public.” Lafferty is part of a conservative organization that is not exposed to the LGBT community, so her statement about transgender people in the gay community is irrelevant and extremely unreliable.

Only 21 states and the District of Columbia have laws that ban job discrimination against gay people. Some companies have also adopted bans on employment discrimination for gays. The coalition is focusing on conservatives by showing that the opportunity to work is something that all Americans deserve regardless of who they love. Commend the coalition for addressing this important issue by signing the petition below.

Dear Americans for Workplace Opportunity,

You started a campaign through a coalition of civil rights groups to end discrimination against the LGBT community in the workplace. It is a problem that many LGBT people face, and something needs to be done about it. The federal government has not taken any action towards banning discrimination since the Employment Non-Discrimination Act was first introduced. It is time that this bill be implemented and enforced.

Not even half of the fifty states have laws that ban discrimination in the workplace for gay people. It is important that all of the states have policies like this, and it needs to be made a priority for the federal government.

Every American deserves the right to work without being subjected to discrimination because of his or her gender identity or sexual orientation. Thank you for recognizing this right and fighting for it.
