Target: U.S. Department of Education
Goal: Provide access to service-learning programs for all students nationwide
Service-learning is a teaching and learning strategy that integrates meaningful community service with instruction and reflection. This enriches the learning experience, teaches civic responsibility, and strengthens communities. Helping students become civically engaged citizens who will grow up to be powerful defenders of our planet and all its inhabitants is vitally important. The Jane Goodall’s Roots & Shoots program is working towards expanding this teaching and learning approach. Help their cause and urge the U.S. Department of Education to support programs that give more children access to service-learning.
The goal of The Roots & Shoots program is to provide children of all ages with the knowledge, tools, and service-learning opportunities they need to improve the environment and quality of life for people and animals. These children are taught how to become leaders in public policy and how to care for their environment. The program teaches compassion towards those who cannot help themselves and understanding of environmental issues. Because children are our future, it is crucial to give future generations the option of becoming responsible, compassionate and smart fighters for current and future causes.
The service-learning programs give students real academic lessons while making an impact in their communities by addressing genuine needs. Sign this petition to urge the U.S. Department of Education to support service-learning programs and provide access to them to all children. The Department of Education should include these programs in every school’s curriculum for students to choose as a platform for becoming civically engaged leaders. These programs help kids gain success in their lives and careers, and create a better future for the environment and earth. Support responsible and compassionate education for all.
Dear U.S. Department of Education,
Service-learning programs are an important approach to education in providing students with opportunities to learn civic engagement and community service. These programs adopt a teaching and learning strategy that helps students become civically engaged leaders, who later may become crucial to fighting worthwhile causes benefitting their communities, society and the environment.
I urge the Department of Education to provide access to these learning programs to anyone who seeks to become a leader for the greater good of society and the environment. While access to high-quality service-learning has increased over the last several decades, many students do not have the opportunity to experience it. The Department of Education should make service-learning as part of every school’s curriculum.
