Target: Michael D Higgins, President of Ireland
Goal: Commend the president for signing a law that keeps abortion legal in life-threatening situations
The struggle for abortion rights in countries dominated by religion has been going on for quite some time, and Ireland is no different. As with the case of Savita Halappanavar, who died in Ireland after being refused an emergency abortion during a miscarriage, and many others, pro-choice groups have struggled to keep abortion procedures safe and legal when a woman’s life is in danger. Thanks to the President and the Council of State, a new law has been passed.
Higgins convened the Council of the State for the first time during his presidency, and the council helped him reach the decision to pass the law rather than send it to Four Courts of Ireland, that would then decide within 60 days if the bill was to pass. The bill itself, called the “Protection of Life During Pregnancy Bill,” gives women legal access to abortion when there is risk to her life, including the risk of suicide. This is a groundbreaking bill for a primary Catholic country. Now, however, women like Savita Halappanavar have a chance of receiving the healthcare they would need to survive in a potentially life threatening situation.
Other countries still struggle with this issue, and would rather put a mother in danger than give her necessary treatment. Sign this petition to show President Higgins your support, and hope that other countries will soon follow Ireland’s example.
Dear President Higgins,
Recently, you signed into law the “Protection of Life During Pregnancy Bill,” which allows women emergency access to abortions in life threatening situations. As a country that is predominantly Catholic, I would like to commend you for your brave and courageous step towards women’s rights. As in the case of Savita Halappanavar, who passed away during a miscarriage in which Irish doctors refused to perform an abortion, women need access to abortion when their lives are in danger.
Other countries still refuse to grant women access to necessary healthcare such as abortion. I hope that through your example, other nations will follow suit and give women the care that they need when lives are in danger. Again, I would like to thank you, and show my support for your deciscion.
