Target: Gilead Sciences
Goal: Make the cure for hepatitis C publicly available
The pharmaceutical company Gilead Sciences released results showing that a combination of drugs proved to be 100% effective in curing hepatitis C, yet they have withheld their part of the cure in an effort to boost profits. Thousands of people are dying of a curable disease due to the companies prioritization of money over people. Demand that Gilead Sciences cooperate in the collaboration needed to produce the cure.
The cure resulted from a combination of the drugs daclatasvir and sofosbuvir; when the two were combined, every member of the clinical trial was cured of hepatitis C. The only problem is that daclatasvir is owned by Bristol-Myers Squibb’s, while sofosbuvir is owned by Gilead Sciences. For the cure to be produced and available to the public the two companies would have to work together. Thus far this has proved to be a problem for Gilead Sciences.
Around 170 million people across the globe have hepatitis C, people who continue to suffer while the cure remains known but unavailable. Since the results of the clinical trial were announced in April, over 300,000 people have died from hepatitis C. Such a waste of human life for increased profits is a travesty.
Bristol-Myers has shown that they are ready and willing to work on this collaboration. Such an effective cure for a dangerous disease comes rarely enough as it is; the fact that treatment is received well and seems to be very safe makes such a discovery truly extraordinary. The main priority should be the health of patients, not the benefit of shareholders.
By singing the petition below, you will encourage Gilead Sciences to work with Bristol-Myers in making the cure for hepatitis C publicly available. Too many lives have already been lost during the companies pursuit of higher profits; enough is enough.
Dear shareholders of Gilead Sciences,
Your company shared results that showed a combination of daclatasvir and sofosbuvir is 100% effective in curing hepatitis C, yet this cure has been withheld for months. Your prioritization of profits over human lives has lead to the deaths of thousands who could have been saved by this cure. A collaboration with Bristol-Myers is long overdue.
As long as the cure remain unavailable, the 170 million people across the globe with hepatitis C will continue to suffer. Since April when the results of the clinical trial were revealed, 300,000 people have died of hepatitis C. Such a loss of human life due to prioritizing shareholder interests over human lives is tragic.
Please take action to work with Bristol-Myers in making the cure for hepatitis C publicly available. Too many lives have already been lost in the pursuit of greater profits.
