Target: Russian President Vladimir Putin
Goal: Investigate and prosecute hate group for alleged violent crimes against LGBT youth
Recently, disturbing allegations surfaced about a neo-Nazi group in Russia bullying and even torturing young LGBT people after luring them with the promise of a date. The campaign is called “Occupy Pedophilyaj” and the founder claims it is meant to identify and report pedophiles. In reality, the group has been utilizing a popular Russian social network to target teens who respond to same-sex personal ads, luring the victims to a meeting place and then videotaping them being interrogated, bullied, and abused.
Many of the videos have been uploaded to the internet, revealing the violent truth of the campaign. When interviewed by a local newspaper, one campaign leader made the views of the group very clear. “We do not like homosexuals,” he said, according to a translation. “If it was up to me, I’d kill them but the government doesn’t allow that.” He goes on to add that he believes “practically all” gay men are pedophiles, in an attempt to justify the group’s violent actions.
Though the group acknowledges that murder is illegal, they seem to believe that bullying and torturing LGBT teens is somehow acceptable. The Russian government needs to send a strong message that makes it clear that this behavior is reprehensible and will not be tolerated under any circumstances. Please sign the petition below to demand a full investigation into the allegations of violence and hate crimes, and prosecution to the fullest extent of the law for those involved.
Dear President Putin,
Due to laws such as those that call for arresting individuals for mentioning homosexuality to minors, Russia is generally not seen as an LGBT-friendly region. However, recent actions by a Russian hate group completely cross the line regardless of your views on homosexuality. The Occupy Pedophilyaj campaign is allegedly targeting naïve LGBT teens on social networks, using personals ads to lure them into meeting. When the victim arrives for the supposed date, they are interrogated, bullied, and beaten.
The numerous videos of such incidents uploaded to the internet show that the participants in these violent hate crimes have no fear of arrest or prosecution; it is possible that they view Russia’s anti-gay laws as a tacit approval for violence against innocent LGBT teens. To preserve Russia’s international reputation and to protect the nation’s youth from violence, it is absolutely necessary that these alleged crimes are fully investigated and prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law. Anything less would serve to validate the viewpoint that such heinous acts are tolerated in your country.
