Target: New Jersey United for Marriage
Goal: Support the fight for same-sex marriage in New Jersey
A recent poll found that the majority of New Jersey residents support extending the right to marry to same-sex couples. At 64% in favor, New Jersey is the most LGBTQ-friendly state in the U.S. that does not allow same sex marriage. The time has come to address this discrepancy; bipartisan coalition groups are putting together an aggressive campaign to finally put New Jersey on the side of equality.
The “New Jersey United for Marriage” campaign has already gained impressive momentum and its supporters vow to take to the streets, knock on people’s doors, and lobby legislators and corporations. Prominent Republican donor Paul Singer also joined the cause and hopes that his foundation will build Republican support for gay marriage. They aim to convince state legislators to overrule Governor Chris Christie’s veto of allowing same-sex marriage. Christie vetoed the bill in 2012 and believes that same-sex marriage should be decided by New Jersey voters through a referendum. He fears that choosing a stance will alienate potential voters for his re-election. Yet the New Jersey United for Marriage campaign rightly believes that a referendum should not matter; whether the mass population agrees, the right to marry is a principle of civil rights, not one that should be left in the hands of popular choice.
By signing below, you will send support to this important campaign that would allow LGBTQ individuals in New Jersey to live with the respect and dignity they deserve. Under the current law, people’s families and finances are negatively affected by unequal marriage benefits and recognition. Furthermore, New Jersey would benefit from extending same-sex marriage because it would attract LGBTQ businesses to settle in the state. Stand in solidarity with the campaign’s door-to-door grassroots efforts as well as their mission to override Christie’s veto of same-sex marriage.
Dear New Jersey United for Marriage,
We applaud your heroic efforts to override Governor Christie’s veto of extending marriage to same-sex couples. Establishing same-sex marriage in New Jersey would not only validate the dignity that LGBTQ individuals deserve, but would also set a precedent for other states in the country who are against same-sex marriage. Although polls have found that the majority of New Jerseyans are in favor of same-sex marriage, your resolve against the use of a referendum is admirable. We stand by your position against Governor Christie’s proposed referendum; the right to marry should not determined by popular opinion because it is a fundamental civil right.
The road to achieving same-sex marriage in New Jersey will be difficult, but you have the support of millions throughout the country and beyond. Your efforts have been championed as possibly “the largest advocacy campaign New Jersey’s seen in years.” From the U.S. Supreme Court to a single participant at the first rally in Asbury Park, the world has spoken that same-sex couples must receive the same benefits that heterosexual ones do. We stand in solidarity with those voices and your fight.
