Target: North Carolina governor Pat McCrory
Goal: Condemn Governor McCrory for breaking his campaign promise to protect a woman’s right to choose
North Carolina Governor Pat McCrory recently vowed to sign into law several new restrictions that will close nearly all abortion clinics and severely limit women’s access to medical coverage for abortions in North Carolina. Despite promising in his gubernatorial campaign in 2012 that he would not change the status quo of abortion rights if elected governor, McCrory is set to sign the bill into law. This law is a part of a systematic attack by the Republican-dominated state legislature on women’s reproductive rights that must be condemned and stopped.
This new law would bar health insurance offered under North Carolina Obamacare insurance marketplaces from covering abortion. County and city employees will also not receive benefits under their health insurance plans that would help pay for abortion procedures. The law also forces abortion clinics to meet certain standards commensurate with ambulatory surgical centers. North Carolina currently has sixteen abortion clinics, and under the new strictures fifteen of the clinics would be forced to shut down because they do not meet these elevated standards. These anti-abortion measures were added to a bill regarding motorcycle safety under a veil of darkness. Such tactics reflect how conservative the Republican base is in North Carolina. Gynecologists and obstetricians have vehemently rejected these new regulations and have told lawmakers that the government needs to stay out of their exam rooms.
Governor McCrory vacillated on whether he should support the bill or veto it while the legislature continued to amend it. McCrory finally articulated his intent to sign the bill into law in a recent press conference. Please sign this petition to condemn the governor for breaking his campaign promises to not further restrict women’s access to abortion rights in a state that has recently scaled back on its protection of reproductive rights for women.
Dear Governor Pat McCrory,
We condemn you for breaking your campaign promise to protect abortion rights in the state of North Carolina. In 1973 the U.S. Supreme Court passed Roe v. Wade which gave women the right to receive an abortion in the United States. This new bill that you have promised to sign into law infringes on this right enshrined in the Constitution. It will shut down nearly all abortion clinics in North Carolina because of elevated facility standards and will bar health insurance providers from covering abortion costs. These provisions will greatly upset the status quo of reproductive rights in your state and must not be signed into law.
These new provisions were added to a bill that dealt with motorcycle safety under a veil of darkness. This is unacceptable. It is vital that women possess access to reproductive healthcare, and the restriction of their rights could have disastrous consequences. The state should not interfere in a woman’s autonomy over her own body and rather should respect the Supreme Court’s decision to ensure their right to choose. Please reconsider your decision to sign this bill into law; veto it, and keep your campaign promises.
