Target: Governor John Kitzhaber, Oregon
Goal: Commend Oregon for passing bill that allows tuition free state universities
Recently Oregon passed a bill that introduced a plan titled “Pay it forward. Pay it back.” The goal of this plan is to make tuition at state universities free, requiring students pay 3 percent of their income for 20 years. Commend Oregon for introducing a plan that will help lower student debt and help the economy.
The plan behind Pay It Forward is to make it easier for students to obtain higher education and ease into the middle class once they obtain their bachelor’s degrees. Unlike traditional student loans, being unemployed won’t affect the status of the student in the program. They continue going to school, and once employed again, they resume their regular payments. There are also no taxes or interest paid for participating in this program.
Oregon’s approach to the education system is effective and exactly what is needed to start helping students. If students are already able to pay for their education then they can use that money for other future investments such as car or house payments. It also allows for future students to be covered when they attend university as the funds collected will go back to covering future tuition.
Oregon’s decision to pass a bill allowing free higher education must be commended. The state has paved the way for continued change in the education system.
Dear Governor Kitzhaber,
I commend you for your decision to pass House Bill 3472 providing tuition-free state university enrollment. The vision behind Pay It Forward shows hope for the future of education in America.
Pay It Forward will make it easier for students to obtain higher education and ease into the middle class once they obtain their bachelor’s degrees. This will positively affect the economy as a whole. It is also great that there are no taxes or interest rates in the program, and that it will not affect the student’s credit report.
Pay It forward’s approach to the education system is effective and exactly what is needed to start helping students. By reducing their payments, yearly and overall, students get a chance to invest in their futures more. You are creating a path for a flourishing economy.
I applaud you for introducing Pay It Forward and paving the way for other states to possibly replicate the act. Education must be provided to all equally. Thank you for displaying dedication to that idea.
