Condemn Target for Supporting Homophobia Again

Target: Gregg W. Steinhafel, CEO of Target Corporation

Goal: Criticize Target for donating money to a homophobic gubernatorial candidate

The popular American retail company, Target Corporation, has once again donated a significant amount of money to support an anti-gay politician. This time it is $50,000 donated to the gubernatorial campaign of Republican Ken Cuccinelli. Ken is an attorney general from Virginia with an extensive history of homophobic remarks, who also wishes to re-instate a “Crimes Against Nature Law” – legislation that would ban homosexual acts. Target is a major retailer with huge profits and it should donate money towards worthwhile causes and not support homophobic politicians or anything that would suppress anyone’s civil liberties. The corporation’s CEO, Gregg W. Steinhafel, should be condemned for this decision.

In 2012, Target donated $150,000 to a political action committee that supported homophobic Minnesota gubernatorial candidate Tom Emmer. This decision was met with a lot of criticism and backlash from Target’s customers and gay rights activists. Following the scandal Target apologized and revised its corporate giving policies, and even launched a series of Gay Pride shirts in an attempt to restore its gay-friendly reputation. It seems that these policy changes have come to no avail, because just a year later, the company has donated money to an anti-gay politician yet again.

Even though Target is trying to fool the public by donating the same amount of money to the Democratic Governors Association, which supports gay-friendly candidates, it does not offset the offense to the LGBTQ community. There should be no matching donations to opposing parties, because there should be no donations to candidates opposing civil rights in the first place. Target should be doing serious damage control this time around and its customers should not support the business in the future. Sign this petition to condemn Target for donating money to a homophobic gubernatorial candidate after lying about not ever doing so again.

Dear Gregg W. Steinhafel,

I am extremely disappointed in your decision to donate money to the gubernatorial candidate Ken Cuccinelli, attorney general from Virginia. Cuccinelli has a history of homophobic remarks, saying such things as gay and lesbians being harmful to society, among many other discriminatory comments on sexual acts between consenting adults.

Your political donation is very disappointing and in poor taste. The Target Corporation has already previously been criticized for making a similar donation in 2010. After that decision, your company allegedly revised its corporate giving policies and even launched a series of Gay Pride merchandise. You have betrayed the public by this insincere PR decision now that you have supported homophobia again.
