Target: Former President George H. W. Bush
Goal: Commend selfless act to support 2-year-old cancer patient
A cancer diagnosis is never easy for anyone, but it is especially difficult when you are only two years old. Patrick, the toddler son of a member of former President George H. W. Bush’s security team, lost his hair during treatment for leukemia. To show solidarity with the brave cancer fighter, Bush and other members of his Secret Service detail shaved their heads to match. This selfless act shows compassion and empathy for the struggle Patrick has faced, and should be applauded.
Thousands of children in America are diagnosed with cancer each year. Aside from the obvious health concerns, many of them will also struggle with the emotional impact of the diagnosis. A strong support system of family, friends, and community members can do wonders to help someone stay positive through cancer treatment, which is often physically and mentally draining. Former President Bush unfortunately knows this from experience, having tragically lost a child to leukemia at the age of four.
Although hair grows back, shaving your head in solidarity with a cancer patient is still a meaningful gesture. It shows a willingness to sacrifice some of your own personal comfort in order to improve someone else’s. This kind of empathy is something we need more of in today’s word, so please sign the petition below to applaud former President George H. W. Bush for his kind action.
Dear Mr. Bush,
Although I have not personally met Patrick, the young son of a member of your security detail, I can imagine that fighting leukemia at only two years old is not an easy task. Cancer diagnosis and treatment is physically and emotionally taxing on many people several times his age. The fact that he has been brave enough to keep smiling in the face of such adversity is an inspiration. Also inspiring are the recent actions you and your security team took to show solidarity with Patrick.
Although shaving your head is temporary, the compassion and empathy that you showed a young child is not. The kind of support Patrick has received from you and others will certainly help him to stay strong and positive through the remainder of his leukemia treatment. Patrick’s bravery in battling leukemia and your bravery in sacrificing your hair to show solidarity are a welcome bit of positivity in a time where its easy to get distracted by the negatives. You deserve to be applauded for doing your part to ease the burden of Patrick and other children who struggle with cancer.
