Applaud County Clerk for Handing out Marriage Licenses to Same-Sex Couples

Target: Pennsylvania County Clerk Bruce Hanes

Goal: Applaud County Clerk Bruce Hanes for supporting marriage equality

In Pennsylvania, gay marriage has not yet been legalized. More people in the state are supporting marriage equality, but the conservative governor is against it. Pennsylvania is one of the many states that are having a heated fight with the legalization of gay marriage. A county clerk who hands out marriage licenses in Pennsylvania has decided to ignore the state law and hand out marriage licenses to gay couples as well as straight couples.

County clerk Bruce Hanes decided to give out a marriage license to a same-sex couple as a sign of the increasing support for gay marriage in Pennsylvania. In a press release Hanes stated, “Based upon the advice of [my solicitor], my own analysis of the law and mindful of the Attorney General’s belief that Pennsylvania’s marriage laws are unconstitutional, I decided to come down on the right side of history and the law, and was prepared to issue a license.”

Hanes’s bold move has caused some controversy in the state. Some people are in support of him not following the law because he did what was just. Other people who are not in support of equality have said that Hanes should resign as county clerk because he did not follow Pennsylvania law, which defines marriage as between one man and one woman.

Even though state law bans gay marriage in Pennsylvania, county clerk Bruce Hanes has handed out a marriage license to a same-sex couple. He did the right thing by supporting equality. Support Bruce Hanes by signing the petition below.

Dear Bruce Hanes,

Recently, you decided to give a same-sex couple a marriage license in Pennsylvania, where gay marriages are illegal. Even though you did not follow the marriage law, you did the right thing because it was in support of equality.

You expressed your reasoning in a press release for why you gave the same-sex couple a marriage license in a state where it wasn’t legal. The attorney general’s views have impacted you along with the support of many citizens of Pennsylvania. You have made history by standing on their side, which is the side of progress.

Pennsylvania is a state that is becoming closer to legalizing gay marriage. The governor is not in support of any bill that legalizes gay marriage, so it will be a fight to legalize it. Office holders like you are vital to the cause if we want to achieve equality for everyone.
