Commend Judge for Efforts to Preserve Reproductive Rights for Women

Target: Judge Daniel L. Hovland

Goal: Commend judge for upholding women’s rights in the face of sweeping abortion ban

Recently, North Dakota signed into law a sweeping ban on abortions performed after six weeks. The ban would all but prevent women in North Dakota from exercising their federal right to abortion in the United States of America. There is only one clinic in the entire state that even provides abortion services, and this ban would prevent 90% of the procedures done at that facility.

Many women aren’t even entirely aware that they have an unwanted pregnancy at six weeks. With only one clinic in the state that provides these services, other women would have to make travel arrangements or plan in advance to even schedule an abortion, which the six-week ban would make next to impossible.

Republican North Dakota Governor Jack Dalrymple was fully aware of the illegality of this ban when he attempted to put it the law into effect, calling for his fellow Republicans to garner funds to prepare for its legal defense. He called the law “an attempt by a state legislature to discover the boundaries of Roe vs. Wade”. The governor was deliberately pressing the boundaries of women’s rights, in a political game at the deficit of half of his constituency.

Judge Daniel L. Hovland saw this unquestionably unconstitutional law and issued a preliminary injunction against it, putting the law and its enforcement on hold. Citing Roe vs. Wade and Planned Parenthood of Southeastern Pennsylvania vs. Casey among others, he declared the law “in direct contradiction to United States Supreme Court precedent”.

Please sign this petition to commend Judge Daniel L. Hovland for standing up for women’s rights in North Dakota and putting into motion the end of this unconstitutional and destructive law.

Dear Judge Hovland,

Thank you for your support of women’s rights in North Dakota. When North Dakota attempted to institute a sweeping ban of abortions throughout the state, you took a stand against this threat to women’s autonomy and blocked the enforcement of this destructive and unconstitutional law.

It seems that more and more in the political games our elected officials are playing, women’s basic human rights are the ball. Thank you for putting a hold on this twisted game for the time being, and please continue your efforts to ensure that women are able to practice their constitutionally protected rights in this country.
