Target: North Carolina Republicans
Goal: Condemn North Carolina Republicans for sharpening new restrictions on voting
In light of the U.S. Supreme Court’s decision to strike down section 4 of the Voting Rights Act—a provision that banned discriminatory practices and laws that could disenfranchise racial minorities—the extremely conservative North Carolina Republicans have introduced newer and more extreme voter-ID measures. They recently introduced a bill that would disenfranchise approximately 318,000 registered voters who do not possess the accepted forms of state-issued ID. It has been further amended by Republicans to further suppress voting. This appalling attack on voting rights that specifically targets minorities, students and the poor by the Republicans in North Carolina must be stopped to ensure that every citizen has access to his or her right to vote in elections.
The slew of voter suppression provisions include halting early voting a week early, ending same-day voter registration during the early voting period and enabling poll-watchers with agendas to challenge those eligible to vote. Furthermore, polling hours would not be extended in the event that there are long lines. The bill also eliminates Citizens Awareness Month, which fostered interest in citizens to register to vote.
Proponents of this appalling bill claim that they are worried about salient voter fraud despite the statistics that show that since 2000 only two incidents of voter fraud and impersonation occurred in North Carolina. These new measures are not pertinent to the problem of voting fraud. GOP policymakers want to preserve their power in order to eliminate eligible voters from participating in their democratic system. Such abuse of power should be condemned. Please join the fight against voting suppression and sign this petition to prevent the worst voter suppression bill in the country to be enacted.
Dear North Carolina Legislature,
We condemn your swift and systematic attack on voting rights in North Carolina. The proposed bill that includes a slew of voting suppression measures would be the worst voter suppression bill in the nation. All citizens of the United States as a democracy have the privilege and duty to vote in elections. This bill would disenfranchise 318,000 registered voters who do not have the narrow forms of state ID that are accepted.
Many proponents of this bill claim that they fear the prevalence of voter fraud and thus seek to stop it. However, the measures contained in this bill have no relevance to voting fraud and seek to keep certain groups of people from participating in the democratic system in North Carolina. This abuse of power is an affront to what the United States stands for and serves only to preserve the power of Republicans. Please stop this attack on voting rights to show that democracy is still in action in North Carolina.
