Thank Utility Company for Environmental Leadership

Target: CPS Energy Board of Trustees

Goal: Commend CPS Energy for outstanding leadership in reducing pollution and promoting clean energy

In the state of Texas, the municipally owned power utility company CPS Energy has drawn praise for its leadership in clean energy and protecting the environment. In analyses of its 2012 calendar year, researchers and environmental advocates have found that the company has engineered a massive reduction in carbon pollution (as well as other climate damaging pollution) from its power plants. In that year, the company committed to phase out and retire the notorious JT Deely coal plant, an aging and inefficient polluting facility, more than a decade ahead of schedule.

Under the leadership of CEO Doyle Beneby and its Board of Trustees, CPS Energy has also made major investments in solar power. Under a new solar energy program, more than 400 megawatts of clean solar power will be provided to CPS Energy’s Texan customers. Not only will clean energy be provided to consumers throughout the state, but solar projects will create sustainable jobs and reduce energy costs for consumers.

Al Armendariz, representative of Sierra Club’s Beyond Coal Campaign stated: “We congratulate CPS Energy on a job well-done. Phasing out the old Deely plant and making significant investments in solar power and energy efficiency is good planning, good for our economy, and good for San Antonio’s ratepayers…The reductions in carbon pollution at CPS Energy have set the benchmark for Texas utilities.” Please sign the petition below to commend CPS Energy for its outstanding leadership in pollution reduction and clean energy production. Clearly, the company is taking the right stance on the energy future of this country.

Dear Board of Trustees of CPS Energy:

Environmental advocates from the Sierra Club to Greenpeace have commended your San Antonio, Texas-based municipal utilities company (CPS Energy) for taking leadership in the struggle for clean energy and against pollution. Not only has your company committed to phasing out its worst-polluting coal plants and facilities, it has also launched ambitious solar energy programs that promise to pave the path for a cleaner energy future.

Your recent track record has shown your commitment to sustainable, renewable energy sources, rate controls for consumers, and long-term jobs for Texans. Thank you for your efforts, and I hope you continue to support such endeavors in the future.

  1. I signed your petition with pleasure, although it really isn’t a petition. Nevertheless, if one utility company’s attempts at increasing its use of renewable energy are rewarded, then slowly but surely other utilities will join the bandwagon.
