Condemn Congressman’s Inflammatory Claims about Undocumented Immigrants

Target: Representative Steve King

Goal: Condemn King’s inflammatory remarks about undocumented DREAMers

Representative Steve King of Iowa has come under fire for his recent inflammatory comments about undocumented immigrants. These comments came during the debate about so-called DREAMers (from the Development, Relief, and Education for Alien Minors Act), or young people who were brought illegally to the United States at a young age and now desire a path to citizenship. This path to citizenship would only be extended to undocumented immigrants who came to the country before age 16, who are in high school or have a high school diploma, and who have no felonies or serious misdemeanors on their record.

Speaking of the DREAMers, Representative King said that “[f]or every one who’s a valedictorian, there’s another 100 out there that they weigh 130 pounds and they’ve got calves the size of cantaloupes because they’re hauling 75 pounds of marijuana across the desert.” Immediately challenged about this bizarre claim, King said that he had the data to back it up. As much time has gone by, King has neglected to present any evidence for his statements. While statistics on the undocumented are naturally not complete, the data that does exist on the subject suggest that King’s statements are nothing but idle and hateful fabrication.

In a surprising move, many prominent Republican politicians have also decried King’s false statements. House Speaker John Boehner called the comments “ignorant and hateful,” while House Majority Leader Eric Cantor said King’s lies were “inexcusable.” In a flaccid defense, King claimed that his statistics came from a conversation with a Border Patrol agent; this anecdotal allegation lends no credence to his claims, as the statistics on the matter fail to support them. The current political climate of the United States is ugly and polemical enough when just the facts are involved. When people like King throw delusions, fabrications, and outright lies into the national conversation they make a bad situation worse. Please sign the petition below to condemn King’s falsehoods and demand that he retract them.

Dear Representative Steve King:

I am writing to denounce your recent lies about undocumented immigrants. Your claim that among the DREAMers seeking citizenship there are 100 drug mules for every valedictorian has no basis in fact. Whether you actually believe your own fabrications or made them up to score political points, you deserve condemnation for unfairly slandering millions of people who have done nothing wrong.

This country does not imprison the children of criminals for complicity, and people who were brought here unknowingly as children should not be treated as guilty of a crime. Given the ugly state of American political debate, comments like yours only serve to further polarize the country and incite hatred. I demand that you retract your false statements and apologize for them.
