Target: Georgia Public Service Commission
Goal: Thank the Georgia Public Service Commission for approving historic energy plan for reducing coal plants and supporting solar energy
In a recent move, the elected members of the Georgia Public Service Commission (GPSC) approved a historic energy plan that will make the state of Georgia the clean energy leader in the South. The commission approved a Georgia Power initiative that will retire a full 20 percent of Georgian coal plants by 2016; it will also add a new energy program to bring over 500 megawatts of solar power to Georgia power grids by 2016. Environmental advocates like the Sierra Club and Greenpeace have commended the plan for promoting clean energy, stabilizing consumer electricity rates, accelerating the development of solar power, and creating sustainable and green-friendly jobs.
As coal powered energy rates continue to skyrocket, the GPSC has taken an important step in protecting consumers from the volatile market as well as protecting the environment. According to government reports, the state of Georgia is fifth in the United States in terms of solar energy potential, and yet it is currently ranked 38th regarding the number of installed solar power projects. The new energy plan approved by the GPSC will allow Georgia Power to phase out its expensive and cost-inefficient coal plants and replace them with sounder investments in solar power.
In the words of Georgia Chapter director of the Sierra Club: “[s]olar is the best bet against rising electric rates — the fuel will always be free and you’ll never have to spend millions on environmental controls…Georgia’s Public Service Commission is providing true leadership and protecting consumers.” Please sign the petition below to thank the members of the GPSC for their courageous efforts in protecting consumers, promoting job growth, and facilitating clear energy development.
Dear members of the Georgia Public Service Commission:
Your commission has recently made history with the approval of an important energy plan. This plan, originating with Georgia Power, will close down a full fifth of your state’s coal plants and replace them with investments in solar power sources.
The energy future of this nation is clearly not in expensive, inefficient, and dirty coal power. You were right to see that the development and use of clean energy sources like solar power are crucial to protecting consumers from skyrocketing energy rates and defending the environment. Thank you for your decision; I sincerely hope that your wisdom will be noticed and reflected upon by your counterparts in other states.
