Refuse McDonald’s Genetically Engineered Fries

Goal: Stop McDonald’s from serving new, heavily engineered potato products

A new genetically engineered potato is up for approval by the USDA (U.S. Department of Agriculture). The legume was created by a company that is the main supplier for McDonald’s – which is the largest purchaser of potatoes in the nation. If the genetically engineered potato gets approved by the USDA, McDonald’s will end up selling fries made from barely tested produce. This is especially concerning because the franchise markets heavily towards kids. McDonald’s should publicly commit to not buying these potatoes before they get approved by the USDA.

The genetically engineered (GE) potato developer, J.R. Simplot, currently provides McDonald’s with most of the potatoes it uses in its French fries. The modified potato has reduced bruising and reduced amount of an amino acid that may be carcinogenic. Because McDonald’s is also the largest potato purchaser in the U.S. its support on the issue is instrumental. The franchise stated to a Chicago newspaper that currently “it does not have any GE potatoes in its supply”, however that may change. It is important to urge McDonald’s to refuse to buy these potatoes to fight against genetically engineered foods of any kind, especially those that are marketed towards children.

Recent studies have revealed that the engineered potatoes may be a possible carcinogen in rat labs. This is common for most genetically engineered foods, and their impact on human health is still questionable. Because McDonald’s plays such an important role in the market for potatoes, it can make or break this genetically engineered potato’s success. Genetically engineered foods are inadequately tested, and they’re potentially unsafe. But McDonald’s can help keep GE potatoes off the market, because if they won’t buy it, then farmers probably won’t plant it. McDonald’s is the largest potato purchaser in the U.S. and can have a tremendous impact on making or breaking an industry. Currently there is a new genetically engineered potato up for approval at the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA). This potato was developed by J.R. Simplot, a company that currently provides McDonald’s with most of the potatoes it uses in its French fries.

As a consumer I am very concerned about possibly buying genetically modified foods. Genetically engineered foods are not tested thoroughly and there’s a high risk of these foods having adverse effects on human health. I urge you to commit publicly that you will not purchase these genetically engineered potatoes should they get approved by the USDA.
