Target: Don Haynie, CEO of Southern Quality Meats, Inc.
Goal: Condemn Southern Quality Meats (SQM) for torturing pigs
According to the Humane Methods of Livestock Slaughtering Act, pigs are to be handled with the minimum level of discomfort before they are slaughtered and during stunning. At Southern Quality Meats, pigs are instead tortured and jabbed multiple times before they are slaughtered. Reprimand Souther Quality Meats for its failure to meet the requirements of the Livestock Act and for treating pigs inhumanely.
In the beginning of 2013 a video surfaced of employees at SQM repeatedly jabbing mother pigs with electrically charged prongs in the abdomen and genital region. Normally these prongs are used to stun pigs before their throats are slit, but workers at SQM have found it appropriate to use them to torture the defenseless creatures. This was only an act that was able to be recorded, but there could be violations of the Humane Methods Act every day. The person behind the video also witnessed workers beating mother pigs with chains on their faces and heads before dragging them along the floor to be jabbed for up to thirty minutes. This is the definition of animal cruelty.
Pigs that end up in slaughterhouses like SQM live brutal lives until their deaths. Often times when they arrive to slaughterhouses they are crippled. Pigs are artificially impregnated repeatedly and their children are taken from them after only weeks every time. When their bodies have suffered enough and can no longer withstand this treatment they are shipped off to slaughterhouses such as SQM.
SQM cruel treatment of its pigs is unconscionable, but he company is awarded in millions by taxpayer funds to provide schools with food. Stand up against SQM’s decision to take advantage of the defenselessness of its pigs. By signing this petition you are condemning SQM for mistreating, battering, and inhumanely treating its pigs.
Dear Mr. Haynie,
The treatment of pigs at your slaughterhouse has recently been shown to be torturous and abhorrent. Some of your employees have failed to follow the requirements of the Humane Methods of Livestock Act. A video of a worker at SQM jabbing a pig repeatedly and beating it in the head surfaced earlier this year and I must address it. I am appalled at SQM’s approach to animal treatment.
Until the end of their lives at the slaughterhouses pigs are already put through physical hardships and tortured. The entire reason for the Humane Methods Act is to protect them from cruel and unusual treatment just as us as humans are protected from cruel and unusual punishment. So under what circumstances is it okay to smash a pig on the head with chains or jab them in their genitals with electric prongs? Might I ask your employees to answer with you?
I am requesting that you regulate the treatment of pigs and other animals in your slaughterhouses. You must follow the Humane Methods of Livestock Act as directed by law.
