Condemn Proposed Six-Week Abortion Ban

Target: Texas State Legislature

Goal: To protect women’s access to reproductive healthcare

In 1973, the US Supreme Court legalized a woman’s right to choose in its ruling in the landmark case known as Roe vs. Wade. On the same day that Texas’ Republican Governor Rick Perry signed a measure that will close virtually all of the abortion clinics in the state, Republican state legislators proposed a bill that would not allow women to get abortions once doctors could detect a fetal heartbeat, which usually occurs approximately six weeks into pregnancy. Three Republican legislators proposed House Bill 59 on Thursday July 18, and if it passes it would be the most severe abortion ban in the country. This systematic attack on women’s reproductive rights not only in Texas but throughout the country by republicans must be condemned and stopped.

This new bill would mandate that women undergo a preliminary ultrasound, and if a fetal heart beat is found then they would not be eligible to undergo the procedure. Women often do not realize that they are pregnant six weeks into their pregnancy. Moreover, in order to find a heartbeat that early into a pregnancy, doctors must perform transvaginal ultrasounds, which are extremely invasive. Currently, North Dakota is the only state that has signed such a ban into law, but it is being challenged in the courts currently.

Texas already has enacted some of the most severe anti-abortion measures in the country. Governor Perry signed into law House Bill 2, which banned abortion procedures after twenty weeks into pregnancy. The US Supreme Court set a standard in its Roe vs. Wade decision of banning abortion after twenty-four weeks. This new proposed heartbeat bill was supposed to be a part of House Bill 2, but it was feared by many pro-life legislators that it would jeopardize its passage. Please sign this petition to put an end to these extreme measures that eliminate a woman’s right to choose. The GOP’s war on women’s reproductive rights must be stopped now.

Dear Texas State Legislature,

We condemn your systematic attack on women’s reproductive rights in your state. In 1973, the US Supreme Court legalized a woman’s right to choose, and you should respect the law of the land. Recently, Governor Rick Perry signed a law that greatly restricts women’s ability to undergo the procedure because it closed almost all abortion clinics in Texas and outlawed the use of one of the two abortion-inducing medications. This newly proposed House Bill that would ban abortion after a mere six weeks of pregnancy would be the most severe restriction on abortion in the entire country. It is shameful that such an infringement on a woman’s right to choose is taking place in the modern day.

This war on women’s reproductive rights must be stopped. Most women do not even realize that they are pregnant after six weeks. Furthermore, in order to detect a fetal heartbeat so early into the pregnancy, doctors would need to perform a transvaginal ultrasound, an extremely invasive procedure. We urge you to stop stripping women of autonomy over their own bodies and to live up to the ideals enshrined in the US Constitution.
