Targeting Women’s Health Care

Target: United States Congress

Goal: Reject Rep. Denny Rehbert’s proposal to eliminate funding for women’s health care services in order to keep Planned Parenthood and similar organizations in service

The GOP has been waging a war on women’s health care all year long, targeting Planned Parenthood with threats to cut sexual and reproductive health care services that millions of individuals rely on. It is already illegal for Planned Parenthood to use any federal money for abortion services, but Representative Denny Rehbert (R-MO) wants to take these offenses a step further. At the beginning of this month, Mr. Rehbert released a draft legislation to the committee that would completely defund Planned Parenthoods across America, systematically putting women’s health care on the line.

Planned Parenthood, America’s leading sexual and reproductive health care provider and advocate, has been administering affordable assistance to women, men, and teens across America for over 90 years. According to their annual report for 2008-2009, Planned Parenthood reached over 3 million patients providing sexual education, STD/STI treatment, and cancer screening. Pregnancy prevention is the cornerstone of their program with only 3% of their revenue needed for abortion services. In addition to medical services, Planed Parenthood has an extensive website providing comprehensive and interactive tools for teens and parents regarding personal and social issues such as confidence building, parent-teen interactions, relationship care, how to talk to others about your sexuality, setting boundaries for yourself, and how to avoid unsafe sexual situations. Planned Parenthood is more than a clinic, it is an organization that advocates for the right to affordable health care so women can be in charge of their own destiny.

The drafted legislation introduced by Mr. Rehbert is a way of saying that these services are not a necessity and by extension, that women’s health care is not a priority.  The proposal states: “None of the funds made available by this Act may be available for any purpose to Planned Parenthood Federation of America, Inc. or any affiliate or clinic of Planned Parenthood Federation of America, Inc. unless such entities certify that [they] will not perform, and will not provide any funds to any other entity that performs, an abortion” (EC. 524).  Furthermore, this proposal aims to eliminate funding for Title X, a federal act devoted entirely to family planning.

Tell Congress that you value women’s health care and they should too. With a growing population, a shrinking economy, and resources that are being stretched too thin, let’s show our support for an organization that dreams of a world where every child is loved, wanted, and treated fairly. Let’s thank Planned Parenthood for their dedication to women’s health care by refusing to allow Congress to eliminate their funding.

Dear Congress,

Women’s health care services such as Planned Parenthood are deeply valuable to our society and I am asking that you continue allocating federal funds to support these programs, including family planning programs.

Planned Parenthood, and organizations like it, are vital because they provide routine and necessary medical services to women such as gynecological exams, cancer screening, and contraceptive counseling at low costs. It is also important for teens who can use the Planned Parenthood website for information regarding sexual health and responsibility as well as how to foster self esteem, build confidence, and talk with their parents regarding such important issues. Eliminating funding for Planned Parenthood would be a colassal mistake, leaving over 3 million Americans with the pressure of having to pay exorbitant rates for similar services. In addition, in cancelling funding for Planned Parenthood, you are telling the American public that you do not value women’s health.

Please show your support for women’s health care and Planned Parenthood and save 3 million Americans from having to compromise their health care because of the proposed legislation by Rep. Denny Rehbert. Show us that you value women’s health care by NOT allowing Mr. Rehbert’s proposal to develop any further.
