Prohibit Cruel Confinement of Farm Animals

Target: New Hampshire Senate

Goal: Outlaw cruel confinement crates in factory farming

It is currently legal to confine farm animals such as pregnant sows and veal calves in crates so small they can’t even move. This extreme imprisonment is ruthlessly cruel and unnecessary. Please urge New Hampshire to adopt a bill that would prohibit this barbaric treatment of animals.

New Hampshire currently houses some farm animals in cages so small the animals can’t even move around, forcing them to spend their entire miserable lives pent up in one uncomfortable position. Breeding sows and veal calves are among the worst offenses in this callous tradition. Many states have already outlawed these extreme confinement methods and animal protection agencies around the world have condemned this cruel practice of imprisonment (even those that promote meat eating), and the entire European Union has banned these gestation crates. SB59 is a bill that would protect animals by outlawing gestation and immobilization crates in New Hampshire, requiring that animals be given a minimum space for comfort and grooming. Polls have shown that almost 80 percent of New Hampshire voters support this legislation for farm animal protection.

Gestation and veal crates are an absurd and cruel form of imprisonment, and are not necessary in modern farming methods. Please take a moment to urge New Hampshire Senators to follow suit and give animals at least a minimum of care and concern.

Dear New Hampshire Senate,

I was pleased to hear that New Hampshire is currently considering a bill that would allow for more humane treatment of farm animals, specifically breeding sows and veal calves. As many other states have already outlawed the extreme confinement of farm animals, I am asking New Hampshire to follow suit. Please pass SB59 and provide these poor, innocent creatures with at least room to move and groom themselves.

Breeding sows are forced to spend their entire miserable lives crammed into barren metal cages so small that they cannot even turn around. They are forced into an endless breeding cycle, constantly pregnant, giving birth to numerous litters, all the while forced to lie in the same position for all their lives, never even being able to turn around or groom their babies. Veal calves suffer a similar fate in which they are locked into stalls so small they cannot turn around, lie down or even groom themselves. The entire European Union has banned gestation and veal crates and many states here in the US have also banned these extreme confinement systems.

Please follow suit and pass SB59, which would give these poor suffering animals a minimum space requirement. These innocent creatures deserve to at least be able to turn around and  perform their natural behaviors.
