Target: Tom Vilsack, United States Department of Secretary of Agriculture
Goal: Ban the sale of lion meat in the United States
Have you ever seen lion burgers or lion meat tacos on a restaurant menu? Lion meat isn’t currently regulated by the United States government, so lion meat could come from imports, zoos, circuses, or Midwestern farms. Since this meat isn’t regulated, it could also be dangerous for human consumption. Ban the sale of lion meat in the United States to preserve this dwindling species that belongs in the wild, not on your plate.
It’s no secret that lions are being farmed for meat in the United States for sale in restaurants. Illinois representative Luis Arroyo recently proposed a Congressional act that would make it illegal to import, export, breed, buy or sell lions for the purpose of slaughter. African lions are a threatened species and even listed as endangered in some West African countries. Since wild lions are natural predators, they eat many different animals throughout their lives, accumulating parasites and diseases unknown to the human body.
Companies like Exotic Meats USA that also sell meat from iguanas, turtles, kangaroos are perpetuating the problem by creating a demand for threatened and endangered species. Sign the below petition to urge the U.S. government to ban the sale of lion carcasses and other exotic meats.[gravityform id=1 name=Signthe Petition: ajax=false]
Dear Secretary Vilsack,
It is unbelievable that American citizens are condoning the slaughter of threatened and endangered animals for mere variety in their dinner. More specifically, lions are being bred and slaughtered on Midwestern farms for human consumption. Since lion meat is not yet regulated by the U.S. government, consumers have no way of knowing where the meat came from or if it is safe to eat. Since lions are natural predators, their meat could very well be tainted with parasites and diseases that are dangerous to humans.
I am urging you to support Illinois Representative Luis Arroyo’s proposed Lion Meat Act to ban the sale of lions for the purpose of slaughter in the United States. If we do not act now, poachers will have no reason to stop hunting it, exotic meat companies will have no reason to stop selling it, and restaurants will have no reason to stop serving it. We need your help to save threatened and endangered species that belong in the wild and not on our dinner plates.
