Urge State to Pass Stricter Animal Abuse Laws

Target: North Dakota legislators

Goal: Enact stricter animal welfare laws to protect animals from abuse

Two horrific dog abuse stories recently confirmed that North Dakota is in desperate need of better and more stringent animal welfare laws. One of the stories involves a dog owner who faces several charges after he sent his pack of starving and malnourished dogs out at night to forage for food. His emaciated dogs ended up attacking a young man, who was severely bitten. This situation could have been avoided had neighbors and law enforcement authorities, who knew what was going on at the dog owner’s place, had done something about it. Now, these dogs might be put down for attacking a human.

Another incident involved the removal of 170 underfed, filthy dogs at a puppy mill near Wheatland. The dogs were in tiny cages and were exposed to blazing summer heat. Although they will survive, they still require intense medical care. Authorities and neighbors knew of the conditions at the Wheatland kennel, but did nothing until the conditions were so horrendous that law enforcement officials had to move in.

North Dakota’s Legislature continues to send wrong signals about animal welfare. Abusers often get a small fine that is not enough to deter them from abusing animals again. The laws are inadequate. Sign the petition to demand North Dakota lawmakers pass animal welfare laws with actual punishments that will deter people from abusing animals.

Dear North Dakota legislators,

Recent animal abuse events that have occurred in your state confirmed that North Dakota needs stricter animal welfare laws. Abusers often get away with small fines that are not enough to deter them and others from abusing animals.

Prevent animal cruelty from becoming a normal occurrence in your state. Pass laws with stricter punishments to deter people from abusing animals. Also, give law officers the power to act faster in cases of animal abuse. Often times, when they do respond, it is already too late for some animals.
