Commend England and Wales For Legalizing Gay Marriage

Target: British Parliament and Prime Minister

Goal: Commend the British Parliament for legalizing gay marriage and promoting social justice and equality globally

Recently, the British Parliament legalized gay marriage in England and Wales by approving the final changes to a law that conservative Prime Minister David Cameron backed. Both the Liberal Democrats and the Labour parties supported the bill, but Conservatives remained split on the measure. As a formality, Queen Elizabeth II must approve of the Parliament’s decision and is expected to do so by the end of the week. The passage of this bill demonstrates great progress in the global efforts to promote freedom, equality and respect and must be commended and recognized by countries worldwide.

Proponents of the bill believe it does not undermine traditional marriage, although under the stipulations outlined in the bill religious establishments retain the ability to deny participating in and executing gay marriage ceremonies. The Prime Minister backed this bill in order to evince an image of his administration as progressive and invested in promoting social equity. After a third reading of the bill, the lower house of parliament known as the House of Commons approved of minor adjustments made by the House of Lords and therefore ensured the passage of the law. It confers onto same-sex couples the same legal rights obtained by individuals in a heterosexual relationship. Prior to this bill, gay couples entered into a “civil partnership.” This nomenclature conveyed the notion that society rendered gay relationships inferior. This bill thus marks a step towards social justice and allows those in a civil partnership to convert their relationship legally to a marriage.

Twenty years ago, the passage of such a measure would have been inconceivable, many constituents proclaimed following their vote. Gay marriage ceremonies are now expected to take place as early as next summer. Please sign this petition to commend the British parliament in pursuing a progressive agenda in the fight for human equality globally. The passage of this bill will no doubt influence other countries to pursue the adoption of similar legislation. Hopefully, the United States will follow Britain’s example and legalize gay marriage in all 50 states.

Dear British Parliament and Prime Minister Cameron,

We would like to commend you on your recent decision to pass a bill that will legalize gay marriage upon Queen Elizatheth II’s assent in Wales and in England. This bill marks a step towards the attainment of social equity and justice worldwide. We hope that the United States will eventually emulate your example and legalize gay marriage in all fifty states.

It is noteworthy that Prime Minister Cameron advocated for this marriage equality bill despite being a member of the Conservative Party. The bipartisanship shown by the outcome of this bill is commendable and should also serve as an example to the United States legislature for how decisions should be made based on ethical principles and morality. The citizens of England should be very proud that the human rights campaign has made progress internationally, as evident by the passage of this bill. Please continue to fight for social justice, equity, and respect despite political differences. We commend you.
