Target: Administrator for NOAA Fisheries, Samuel Rauch
Goal: Save the North Atlantic right whale from extinction due to human activities.
There are fewer than 500 North Atlantic right whales alive in our oceans. Today, their survival is constantly threatened by vessel strikes, entanglements in fishing gear and other man-made dangers. Seventy-two percent of their known mortalities are the result of these threats. However, a recent trial regulation reduced right whale deaths caused by vessel strikes by 80-90%.
The rule, which emphasizes the reduction of ships’ speeds in through known right whale habitats has been a tremendous success. However, the rule is only temporary and without support, could be allowed to expire, thereby causing a new spike in right whale deaths. Tell the government that we support sensible policies to ensure the North Atlantic right whale is protected from slaughter at the hands of humans.
