Prevent Drilling in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge

Target: Governor of Alaska Sean Parnell

Goal: Prevent the drilling and gas development of Arctic National Wildlife Refuge

The governor of Alaska, Sean Parnell, recently released a proposal that would allow exploratory drilling and gas development in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge. $50 million dollars will come from Alaskan taxpayers and another $50 million from American taxpayers to move forward with the operation. It is infuriating the governor wishes to destroy a place that is considered a refuge.

“The Arctic Refuge was established for the conservation of the landscape’s extraordinary values, including fish and wildlife populations, and habitat for the porcupine, caribou herd, polar bears, grizzly bears, musk oxen, Dall sheep, migratory birds and fish,” said Nicole Whittington-Evans, Alaska regional director for The Wilderness Society. The refuge was made official during President Eisenhower’s presidency and it was done for conservation efforts. Allowing companies to drill in this area will disrupt the ecosystems and the local wildlife, not to mention possibly releasing toxins into the land. Also native communities who live off of the environment will also suffer at the hand of these drilling companies. No doubt their food source will be scared away, and the environment destroyed.

As many as a million American citizens have protested to President Barack Obama, stating that a land as precious and vital to Alaska’s wildlife should not be developed or drilled in. Many conservationists refer to this area as America’s Serengeti. The President have heeded their calls and his administration have opposed any future drilling. It is quite clear that Governor Sean Parnell does not care for the habitat of his state, even though both President Obama and President Eisenhower felt that the refuge was precious.

The governor should instead use the $50 million taxpayer dollars to research and invest in renewable green energy. Why he hasn’t done so is mind boggling, as oil and gas are not renewable energy sources. Indeed they further pollute the planet. Sign this petition and prevent the governor from drilling in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge.

Dear Governor Sean Parnell,

I request that you halt any future proposals regarding the oil and gas exploration of the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge. This land is a refuge and as such should be protected from development and pollution. Established as a refuge by President Dwight Eisenhower, he recognized that this was a land rich with wildlife and recreation; President Obama also shares the same view as do many conversationalists. To drill here would destroy this cherished landscape, disrupting ecosystems and hindering the native communities that live off of the land.

Please consider the future generations who will come to live in this refuge. Please consider the polar bears whose icy habitat is already melting away, please consider the caribou and the fish, and the migratory birds. There are so many varieties of life who thrive off of this harsh environment. I implore you not to make it harder for them to survive.

  1. Please put the effort into solar, wind, wave, and geo-thermal — in such a manner that the earth and all the inhabitants are kept safe, whole and healthy.
