Ban Cruel Pig Crates in Canada

Pigs in gestation crates

Target: Canada’s National Farm Animal Care Council (NFACC)

Goal: Ban the use of gestation crates for pigs

Recently Canada’s National Farm Animal Care Council released a draft code of practice for the pork industry to follow. This code of practice is actually a step in  the right direction in regards to humane treatment of farm animals, because it includes significant improvements in the treatment of pigs. However, there is a loophole that still allows pregnant pigs to be caged inside cruelly small gestation crates.

Gestation crates are so small that pigs cannot even turn their bodies around. The loophole in the draft allows pigs to be confined in these crates for weeks at a time, amounting to about nine months of the pig’s short life. The long periods of confinement take a toll on their physical and mental health. The lack of mobilization weakens their bones and muscles, and the lack of mental stimulation can drive them to insanity. The Humane Society of the United States has compared it to a person being forced to live in an airline seat.

Pigs are highly intelligent creatures, among the most intelligent in the world, and do not deserve this type of cruel treatment. Please sign this petition to ask that the National Farm Animal Care Council fix the loophole in the new draft code of practice, ending the use of gestation crates.

Dear National Farm Animal Care Council,

I commend you on your newly released draft code of practice in regards to pig treatment standards. I, and many people worldwide, appreciate what you are doing to improve the standards by which these intelligent animals live, and the example you setting for other countries.

However, I must point out that there is a significant loophole in the draft. The present draft code of practice still allows sows to be confined in gestation crates for up to five weeks at a time, which would be cruel and debilitating. As you may know, the strict confinement causes them lasting physical and mental damage, and it would be especially disheartening to know that animals as intelligent as pigs would continue to endure such torture.

Therefore I request that you to mend your draft code of practice in a way that closes the loophole and bans the cruel use of gestation crates.

I find the practice of keeping theses intelligent animals confined to such horrific conditions despicable. This must be stopped immediately as this is beyond cruel.
