Target: Walmart CEO Mike Duke
Goal: Rehire woman fired for confronting a Walmart customer for leaving his dog trapped in a hot truck while he shopped
Carla Cheney was a Walmart employee in Kemptville, Ontario who noticed a customer about to leave his dog in a locked truck on a hot day. The dog jumped out of the truck twice to try and follow his owner, and the man returned the animal to the truck and rolled the windows up to leave about an inch of space. Cheney confronted the man, and was promptly fired for her actions. Cheney was off the clock and not yet in her work uniform, and yet she was still fired for attempting to save the life and health of a helpless animal.
Officially, Cheney was fired for being rude to a customer. However, since she was not yet signed in for work and was not wearing her uniform, a customer is just another person in a parking lot and this person happened to be leaving a dog trapped in a car on a hot summer’s day. Additionally, no charges were brought against the customer for animal abuse.
Temperatures inside cars left outside can reach deadly levels for animals and humans, and dogs frequently die waiting in hot cars for their owners to return and release them. Dogs’ bodies don’t have such an effective cooling mechanism as sweating, and they rely on panting. If the air in the car is already hot, panting does very little to help. It is a confusing, terrifying process for an animal, and Cheney taking issue with this process was well within reason, and yet instead of being commended, she found that her job was swiftly terminated. There is absolutely no reason to ever leave an animal locked in a hot metal box with temperatures rising every minute, especially in the dead of summer.
This is just the most recent in a string of abuses by Walmart towards its employees. Please sign this petition to stand with Carla Cheney against animal abuse, and to help her regain her rightful employment.
Dear Mike Duke,
Recently, Carla Cheney, an employee of the Kemptville, Ontario branch of Walmart was fired immediately after attempting to save a dog trapped in a hot car.
Carla was doing her civic duty to report abuse and cruelty towards animals, no matter who was committing that abuse. Your corporation has punished her for it, and that is unacceptable. You are discouraging your employees from reporting any further animal abuse on your premises, and if animals are killed or damaged as a result, the blood is on your hands.
Please offer to rehire Carla Cheney, apologize publicly, and change your policy about animal abuse on your premises. The world is watching.
