Target: Film Director, Screenwriter, and Producer Oliver Stone
Goal: Support action against government surveillance of its citizens
Film director Oliver Stone recently participated in a video, produced by the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU), urging Americans to take action against government surveillance of its citizens. Thank Stone for his involvement in the civil liberties battle to stop government spying.
A massive National Security Agency (NSA) spying program was revealed to the world by The Washington Post and The Guardian in June 2013. The papers detailed the extent of the surveillance, which included phone data and email contents of American citizens. The NSA program was leaked by former government technical contractor Edward Snowden, who has fled the country. Stone called Snowden a “hero” at a film festival prior to appearing in the video that criticized the NSA program.
Stone is an Academy Award-winning director, screenwriter and producer. He has worked on topical films, including JFK and Nixon, as well as critically-acclaimed films such as Platoon and Scarface. He appears in the ACLU-produced video, titled “Oliver Stone on NSA Spying,” and advocated for Congress to stop the government from secretly surveilling its citizens, citing lessons from American history. “This country was born in rebellion because the British government was exerting too much control over American lives,” Stone says in the video. “We broke free and began to create a system of government meant to protect liberty. Our national history reveals a constant struggle to stay true to this value. We face one of those moments of struggles right now.”
As Stone says in the video, “The question is not ‘do you have something to hide?’ The question is whether we control government or the government controls us.” The NSA program is an overreach by the government that intrudes on the liberty of American citizens. The ACLU is working to advocate for an end to the NSA’s spying, and Stone’s collaboration with the group is an encouraging sign that people of influence are helping turn public opinion against this violation of civil liberties. Thank Stone for his contribution to the movement against government surveillance of private communications by signing the petition below.
