Target: Rex W. Tillerson, CEO/Chairman of ExxonMobil
Goal: End discrimination against LGBT job applicants and employees
Recently, it was reported that the state of Illinois had begun an investigation of ExxonMobil due to discrimination against a gay applicant. Freedom to Work, an advocacy group for LGBT workers, filed a complaint after a test case whereby an applicant with work experience with a gay rights organization was given less consideration than another applicant with less experience on her resume. As reported by The Huffington Post, a similar test with a gay and non-gay applicant showed discrimination by the company in hiring practices.
The lack of a listed company policy against discrimination in employment and benefits for LGBT workers is responsible for cases such as the one in Illinois. ExxonMobil’s refusal thus far to ensure equality goes against a growing nationwide trend. Senator Tom Harkin (D-Iowa), Chairman of the Senate Committee on Health, Education, Labor & Pensions, has stated “As of April 2013, 434 (88 percent) of the Fortune 500 companies had implemented non-discrimination policies that include sexual orientation, and 282 (57 percent) had policies that include gender identity.”
ExxonMobil can remedy this situation through implementing a corporate-wide policy guaranteeing equal labor rights including in hiring to LGBT applicants. Through signing this petition, you will be asking the company to join the growing consensus in favor of equal rights for all workers regardless of sexual orientation.
To Rex W. Tillerson,
Recently, the state of Illinois announced it was investigating your company due to a test case whereby an applicant with a resume indicating experience with an LGBT advocacy organization was passed over in favor of another job-seeker with a weaker resume. This is not the first story alleging discrimination against ExxonMobil, as a similar test in Texas showed the same results.
These cases are the inevitable result of ExxonMobil’s refusal thus far to implement a non-discrimination LGBT policy. This goes against the growing trend of Fortune 500 companies recognizing that ensuring equal rights to employment regardless of sexual orientation and gender identity is as essential as protections covering ethnic origin or religious belief.
I ask you to ensure ExxonMobil provides for equality in the workplace through adopting a nondiscrimination policy.
