Target: Illinois State Legislature
Goal: Decrease gun violence in the state of Illinois with new gun control legislation.
Would you want your state representatives to broaden gun entitlements on the helm of increasing gun violence? In Illinois, the state legislature did just that. In the face of growing gun violence, they passed a bill ending the current ban on residents of Illinois carrying concealed firearms in public. Despite an increasing problem of gun violence in the urban city of Chicago, Illinois state legislature has decided to pass the proposed bill. This comes after a veto by State Governor Pat Quinn.
In Chicago, 12 lives were lost over the Fourth of July weekend due to fatal gun wounds. Authorities state over 60 gun-related injuries were reported. The city of Chicago accounts for 20% of the population of Illinois. The implementation of this bill may compromise more lives of fellow Illinois residents. Though the state is the last in the US to pass a concealed weapons law, the fact that Illinois is inflicted in the crisis of gun violence will not waver.
Without a promise by Illinois state delegates to protect their constituents, the expansion of future laws that can widen the occurrence of gun violence may be passed. Urge Illinois State Representatives to be a model for the nation and promise to work together to pass laws that will diminish gun violence rates in the state of Illinois.
